Grace Gale Interview

By Dave Huffy

Grace Gale is a fun rocking time with their debut album on Black Out! Records aptly titled "A Few Easy Steps To Secure Heli-Camel Safety". The album blends plenty of all around elements well liked by any fan into Converge, Every Time I Die, and even some old school metal thrown in there to add even more rock. The band will be a powerful force in the growing world of ever expanding heavy music, mixing screamo, early emo, hardcore and whatever else comes their way that they can turn into savvy riffs and splendid hooks. TheHXC spoke with Grace Gale about what drives this intense act to play the amalgamation of influences running in their hard rocking veins, their upcoming extensive tour plans and how to secure heli-camel safety.

TheHXC.com: When did Grace Gale Form?

Grace Gale: September 2004, with this line up. There was another grace gale previously that had started in 2003 with a couple different members. But several people had left the band and the remaining members decided to keep the name but basically start a new band with a new sound. Which led us to where we are today.

TheHXC: What other acts were members of Grace Gale In?

Grace Gale: One dying wish, the Christ punchers, Downplay, Suicidal 8th grade girls, Surrender Tomorrow, and Betties Defect.

TheHXC: Who is Grace Gale?

Grace Gale: Bucky- guitar, winky- bass/vocals, fergie- guitar/vocals, corky- drums, cookie- vocals, and darrell madden. We all share the same last name.

TheHXC: How did you guys come up with the album title "A Few Easy Steps To Secure Heli-Camel Safety"?

Grace Gale: Our bass player, winky, went on a vision quest, and met several spiritual guardians in animal form. One of which happened to be a heli-camel. We then got the album title because we wanted to have
airplane safety direction style liner notes and the guy who was doing
the layout came up with the title and it stuck.

TheHXC: I notice a lot of screamo, early emo, Every Time I Die and Converge elements in the disc, what bands influence you the most?

Grace Gale: I'd say you pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one. But add Motley Crue to that. All of us look up to them a ton as musicians.

TheHXC: With all of the various types of music in your sound do you think the next album will border on the same lines or will the sound change for the most part?

Grace Gale: I'd say I think we'll stick to the same sort of thing. I feel we've found a sound that works for us and has some originality to it. We want try and stick to having some varying dynamic in our music. I think the next album we'll probably experiment a little more in some harder things but at the same time I would like to try and mix that up
with more singing, and straight rock aspects.

TheHXC: Are there touring plans for Grace Gale?

Grace Gale: Yes, tons. We plan on trying to be on the road year around. We just recently started working with thunderdome booking. So hopefully he'll be keeping us out all the time. I think a big part of making it as a band is staying on tour as much as possible. But right now we have few dates coming up with the letters organize. And then Lovehatehero in November. After thanksgiving we'll be out with Texas is on fire until December and then we'll be going out with Drowningman and Gods for the rest of December.

TheHXC: Are there any Grace Gale side projects?

Grace Gale: No not at the moment. I'm sure in the future there will be.

TheHXC: How exactly does one safely secure a Heli-Camel?

Grace Gale: That's a great question! It’s not about securing the heli-camel. It’s about operating a heli-camel safely. That's all I know though. I actually think it doesn't mean anything at all.

TheHXC: What is more fun to come up with, the song titles or lyrics?

Grace Gale: I'd say that both are equally as fun. We usually name songs before we write the lyrics. And generally we just pick something we think is silly to write about.

TheHXC.com: That's all on my end is there anything you would like to add?

Grace Gale: Only to keep an eye out for us on tour. We'll be everywhere. And thanks to everyone that has ever come to see us, or bought the CD, or helped us out in any way ever. We appreciate everyone so much.
