PETER CRISS On ACE FREHLEY's Absence From KENNEDY CENTER HONORS: 'I Was Grieving So Much That My Heart Hurt A Lot'

Peter Criss opened up about KISS's early days, Ace Frehley's passing, and his continued musical journey.

In a detailed interview with Rock Candy magazine, original KISS drummer Peter Criss shared insights into his career before, during, and after his time with the band. He described how he was recruited by Gene Simmons after placing an ad and the initial questions that intrigued him about joining the group.

Criss recalled the audition process for the band's lead guitarist, highlighting Ace Frehley's memorable entrance that secured his place in KISS. He explained the band's decision to wear makeup, drawing inspiration from glam rock and The Beatles, aiming to combine theatricality with individual appeal.

The use of makeup, while iconic, also caused confusion among the public who struggled to recognize the members, leading Criss to carry identification to prove his identity at clubs. The drummer also expressed the emotional difficulty of Frehley's absence at the recent Kennedy Center Honors, remembering Ace's excitement about the event prior to his death in October.

Currently, Criss is focused on his solo work, having recently released a new album. He highlighted his long-standing sobriety and described himself as a "drum addict," signaling his commitment to music and a healthy lifestyle after decades in the industry.
