David Ellefson Reflects on His Past with Megadeth at Louder Than Life

The former Megadeth bassist shares his emotional experience watching the band he once called home.

In a recent episode of "The David Ellefson Show", the former MEGADETH bassist, now shredding with METAL CHURCH, opened up about his bittersweet experience at the Louder Than Life festival on September 17 in Louisville, Kentucky. Five hours after MEGADETH took the stage, Ellefson was still in attendance, revealing that he had a chance to catch most of the current lineup during their set. Despite not bumping into the legendary Dave Mustaine, he managed to share a moment with guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari, praising his guitar work, while reminiscing about his connections with drummer Dirk Verbeuren and bassist James LoMenzo.

Ellefson delved deeper into his emotions during the performance, acknowledging the time that has passed since he last rocked out with the band. “It’s been over five years since I was part of MEGADETH,” he reflected. “I’ve moved on and created my own path, but I’ll always have a piece of MEGADETH with me.” With his own solo venture, the 'Bass Warrior' tour, on the horizon—where he'll pay tribute to the classic album, 'Countdown to Extinction'—this moment felt like a nostalgic journey through the past.

The former bassist candidly shared, “Watching the show was surreal. It felt like I was seeing my first MEGADETH show all over again.” Despite the changes in the lineup, he recognized the talent within the current members, asserting, “James does a perfectly fine job playing the parts. It doesn’t sound like me, and that’s okay. He’s his own guy, and I respect that.”

Ellefson's reflections didn’t stop at the performance itself; he also recounted a brief encounter with rock icon Alice Cooper, who encouraged him before heading into the MEGADETH show. The shared camaraderie with legends of the scene highlights the tight-knit fabric of the metal community, even amidst personal transition and change.

As he watched from the audience, the weight of nostalgia hit hard. “It was a rear-view mirror moment,” he admitted. “It’s not that it was good or bad; it’s just different. It’s Dave with three other guys playing our songs.” His frank acknowledgment of the shifting dynamics within MEGADETH serves as a reminder of the evolution that all bands undergo, yet the essence of what they represent remains indelible.

In the wake of tumultuous times, including his controversial exit from MEGADETH, Ellefson's reflections provide a glimpse into the heart of a musician who has shaped heavy metal history and continues to forge ahead with his own projects while honoring his past.
