COAL CHAMBER's Mikey 'Bug' Cox Faces Setback with Broken Femur

By Jason •
The metal community rallies as the iconic drummer battles yet another health crisis.

In a devastating turn of events, COAL CHAMBER's powerhouse drummer, Mikey 'Bug' Cox, has sustained a broken femur during a pickup basketball game, leading to emergency surgery and forcing him to bow out of upcoming performances. The 49-year-old drummer, who has been open about his recent cancer diagnosis and recovery, took to social media to express his heartbreak over missing the highly anticipated shows at Sick New World Texas and the House of Blues in Anaheim.

Cox described the incident, stating, "I suffered a nasty fall playing a pick-up basketball game with my son. I drove in for the game-winning shot (which I made, BTW!), but a collision sent me crashing to the concrete, shattering my femur. I needed surgery and three pins, and I won't be walking for at least six weeks." The weight of his struggles, compounded by previous battles with cancer, has left him vulnerable, but his fighting spirit remains unbroken.

Fans of COAL CHAMBER will be glad to know that Davier Pérez Ortega from DEVILDRIVER will be stepping in to fill Cox’s shoes during this turbulent time. In a heartfelt message, Cox expressed his trust in Pérez, saying, "He's been with me for years, has my complete trust, and is basically the 5th member of COAL CHAMBER. I know he's going to KILL IT!" This sentiment underscores the deep camaraderie that defines the metal community, even in the face of physical adversity.

Despite the setback, Cox is determined to support his band from the crowd and push through the pain. “I’m fighting hard to recover and hoping to make it to the Halloween show,” he said, embodying the relentless spirit of a true metal warrior. The drummer has faced down adversity before, stating, “I’ve played through fractured fingers, dislocated shoulders and cancer treatment, but this time I simply can’t overcome it in time.”

This incident comes on the heels of COAL CHAMBER's triumphant return to the stage earlier this year, marking a significant milestone after Cox’s successful battle with cancer. The band had recently canceled an appearance at Louder Than Life to prioritize his health, a testament to the loyalty and dedication within the ranks.

As Cox continues to recover, he reassures fans, “I WILL BE BACK! Nothing will stop me! Next year is going to be HUGE for COAL CHAMBER!” His unwavering resolve is a beacon for fans and fellow musicians alike, reminding us all of the indomitable spirit that defines heavy metal.
