Darkthrone Announces New Album Pre-Historic Metal, Releases Title Track
Norwegian black metal legends Darkthrone have announced a new studio album titled Pre-Historic Metal, which is scheduled for release on May 8, 2026 via Peaceville Records. The band has also unveiled the album’s title track, giving fans an early taste of the record’s raw and primitive sound.
The upcoming release follows the band’s 2024 album It Beckons Us All and arrives as the group celebrates roughly four decades of existence since forming in the mid-1980s. The duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto continue to embrace their stripped-down approach to metal, blending elements of classic black metal with traditional heavy metal influences.
Speaking about the meaning behind the album title, Fenriz explained that the phrase reflects the band’s commitment to old-school metal aesthetics while still pushing forward creatively. He described the music as rooted in the past but shaped into something new, calling the sound “frightfully barbaric but not without finesse.”
The album will contain eight tracks, including “They Found One Of My Graves,” “Siberian Thaw,” “Deeply Rooted,” and “Eat Eat Eat Your Pride.” According to the band, the songwriting process focused on crafting tighter, riff-driven songs rather than the more sprawling arrangements that sometimes appeared on previous releases.
Recording took place in Oslo, Norway, with production assistance from Ole Øvstedal, Silje Høgevold, and Mads Luis. The record was later mastered by Jack Control and Maor Appelbaum, completing the latest chapter in Darkthrone’s long-running catalog of underground metal releases.
With the release of the title track, fans now have their first glimpse into what the band describes as a primitive, riff-heavy celebration of old metal traditions, continuing Darkthrone’s legacy as one of the most influential acts in the black metal genre.
