Mark Morton Questions the Absence of 'Rip-Off' Bands in Metal

LAMB OF GOD's guitarist reflects on the curious lack of imitation in the heavy music scene.

In a raw and unfiltered exchange with Australia's Heavy, LAMB OF GOD's guitar virtuoso Mark Morton expressed his bewilderment over the apparent absence of newer bands outright emulating the band's signature sound. "It's weird," Morton stated, emphasizing the surprising lack of outright mimicry in a scene that often births waves of clones. Citing the quick rise of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE copycats, he pondered the curious case of LAMB OF GOD's unique standing. "You see bands like KILLSWITCH, who had such success, and then you saw 20 bands come out that sounded like KILLSWITCH. And I don't see that with us," he mused, hinting at the band's distinct legacy.

Morton continued to dissect this phenomenon, noting that while other influential bands like GOJIRA have undeniably inspired a slew of new acts, LAMB OF GOD's character seems to remain untouched. “I find it curious that I don't hear at least a successful rendition of the LAMB OF GOD kind of character in newer bands,” he remarked. It’s an observation that speaks volumes, revealing both pride in his band’s impact and a hint of confusion as to why they haven’t spawned a legion of imitators.

When pressed about the creative freedom that LAMB OF GOD feels while crafting their latest offering, 'Into Oblivion,' Morton reiterated that the band isn't shackled by trends or industry expectations. “I don't feel compelled to try and emulate what KNOCKED LOOSE or SPIRITBOX is doing,” he declared, asserting their authenticity in a genre that can often feel dictated by fleeting trends. At 53 years old, Morton isn’t about to compromise the integrity of LAMB OF GOD's sound for the sake of fitting in with today’s flavor of the month.

The band's latest album, 'Into Oblivion,' unleashed upon the world in March 2026, has been met with a tidal wave of acclaim. Critics have hailed it as a relentless exploration of modern chaos, with Metal Hammer and Kerrang! showcasing the band on their covers. The Associated Press hailed the record as “10 tracks of ferocity,” while Brooklyn Vegan reminded fans that LAMB OF GOD's reign as titans of the New Wave Of American Heavy Metal remains unchallenged. SPIN perfectly encapsulated the album's essence, noting how the band channels America’s unraveling into an explosive collection of tracks.

'Into Oblivion' is available in various formats, including multiple vinyl variants and a limited-edition CD accompanied by a collectible zine filled with sketches, handwritten lyrics, and exclusive studio photos. Produced by long-time ally Josh Wilbur, the album was crafted in locations steeped in the band's identity, from the heart of Richmond, Virginia, to the legendary Total Access studio in Redondo Beach, known for its punk pedigree. As LAMB OF GOD continues to forge their path, one thing is clear: they remain an unstoppable force in the heavy metal realm.
