A new documentary explores Alcatrazz's early challenges alongside the release of their re-recorded album Prior Convictions.

Guitar Meets Science has released a mini-documentary detailing the formation, rise, and internal conflicts of Alcatrazz, a band founded in Los Angeles in 1983. Their story includes key events such as the early prominence of guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen, lineup changes involving Steve Vai, and notable incidents like the backstage altercation in Oklahoma.

Alcatrazz originally featured a lineup including Graham Bonnet, Jimmy Waldo, Gary Shea, and young Malmsteen. They quickly gained critical acclaim with their debut album No Parole From Rock N Roll. The band’s roster has frequently changed over the decades, bringing in musicians like Doogie White and Joe Stump, who has served as the longest-tenured guitarist in recent years.

BraveWords Records recently released Prior Convictions, an album with newly recorded versions of classic Alcatrazz tracks as well as two new songs, featuring vocalist Giles Lavery. Lavery, who has worked with the band since 2017 in various capacities, officially joined as lead singer following successful tours.

Keyboardist Jimmy Waldo remains the central figure in the band's ongoing operations, having managed much of its business and personnel decisions throughout its history. Bassist Gary Shea, who named the band and designed its logo, continues to be involved and recently published a book offering further insight into Alcatrazz's legacy.

The band’s reputation as a supergroup with shifting membership continues, maintaining a lineage connected to its origins despite frequent changes. Their dynamic history reflects both the challenges and enduring appeal of a band rooted in 1980s rock tradition.
