The Black Sabbath guitar legend unleashes his long-awaited solo album, promising to navigate the stormy seas of metal.

In a recent chat with Brent Porche on Philadelphia's 93.3 WMMR, the titan of riffs, Tony Iommi, unveiled the genesis of his forthcoming solo album, From The Dark, set to drop this Friday, October 23, through BMG. After two decades of silence on the solo front and 13 years since Black Sabbath’s last hurrah, Iommi felt the burning urge to conjure new sonic landscapes. “It’s been 21 years, and I thought it’d be nice to do another solo album,” he confessed, highlighting the lack of pressures that often accompany band projects. With his own studio at home, Iommi had the freedom to meticulously craft his vision.

The eponymous title, From The Dark, resonates deeply with the album's mood rather than a specific personal narrative. “It seemed like an appropriate title for the album,” Iommi remarked, with the lyrical prowess of vocalist Jørn Lande helping to breathe life into the music. The album comprises eight tracks, all birthed from Iommi's creative wellspring, starting with instrumental ideas that transformed into a full vocal collaboration.

The lead single, “Stormwatcher”, stands out as a testament to Iommi’s continued mastery, featuring a riff that could only be crafted by the man who shaped the sound of heavy metal. Thematically, the song delves into the chaos of life's journey—a ship battling relentless storms, a metaphor for resilience and ambition as Lande eloquently describes. “We are the captain of our own vessel,” he says, encapsulating the spirit of the track that mirrors the album's darker atmospheres and impassioned themes.

Throughout From The Dark, Iommi is joined by his longtime collaborator, Lande, alongside bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil, ensuring that the musical integrity remains unscathed. Co-produced with Mike Exeter, Iommi has crafted an album that not only honors his legacy but also expands it, blending heavy riffs with profound lyrical depth.

Upon its release, fans can expect a treasure trove of formats, including a deluxe double LP that boasts stunning visuals and premium presentation. Each edition, including the exclusive Amazon CD, invites listeners into Iommi’s dark, illustrative world. As the metal community eagerly anticipates this release, one can only wonder what storms Iommi will navigate next.
