A night of heavy metal at the University of Otago took an unscripted turn when a medical mishap in the mosh pit left concertgoers in distress and forced the band to briefly pause their set.

What was supposed to be an energetic Saturday night performance by New Zealand heavy metal band Devilskin devolved into chaos after a fan experienced an unexpected medical emergency in the center of a packed mosh pit.

The incident occurred several songs into the band’s gig at Union Hall, located on the University of Otago campus in Dunedin. According to witnesses, an attendee suffered a sudden loss of bowel control, leaving feces on the dance floor in the middle of the crowded venue.
A Rapid Chain Reaction

Concertgoer Damian Radburnd, who was standing nearby with his fiancée, described the moment the situation worsened. According to Radburnd, the individual involved attempted to clear the mess with his foot, which inadvertently spread it across a wider area of the pit floor.

As surrounding fans attempted to back away, others in the dense crowd stepped into the area unknowingly, accelerating the spread of the odor. The foul smell quickly triggered a severe physical reaction among nearby concertgoers, with multiple attendees crying and vomiting in a domino effect across the floor.

After realizing the severity of the situation, Radburnd flagged down venue security, who located the individual and confirmed the hazard.
Venue & Band Response

The Otago University Students’ Association later clarified that the event was an unfortunate medical incident rather than a deliberate stunt or prank. Venue staff reported that the concertgoer was fully cooperative and was escorted safely from the premises by security.

On stage, lead vocalist Jennie Skulander noticed the sudden movement and distress in the crowd, pausing the performance to check on the audience's well-being. Once security managed the situation, the band resumed their set and finished the concert.

Devilskin later addressed the bizarre event on social media with good humor, jokingly pitching a fictional "Diaper of Doom"—an adult diaper product for future metal gigs to ensure fans can ride out the mosh pit uninterrupted.
