Drummer Michel 'Away' Langevin Teases New Album Inspired by Symphonic Collaborations

In an electrifying interview with Robert Cavuoto of Metal Rules, VOIVOD's legendary drummer and founding member, Michel 'Away' Langevin, revealed exciting details about the band's forthcoming concept album, slated for release in late 2027. This new material is set to draw inspiration from the band's recent collaboration with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, showcased in their upcoming live album, 'Symphonique', due out on June 5, 2026.

According to Away, the symphonic concerts significantly influenced the band's artistic direction. He stated, 'I think that the symphonic concerts really influenced us in the writing and recording of the future studio album. In between tours, we are doing — we write a new album, and we are recording the album three songs at a time. And I think it's gonna sound a bit like a movie soundtrack.' This ambitious project will feature the return of the iconic VOIVOD mascot, Korgull, making it a must-listen for fans.

Expanding on the band's current creative vision, Away noted, 'We're trying to be more and more experimental. And the last couple of albums were pretty intricate, and we won awards for them, so it's giving us confidence.' The addition of guitarist Chewy (Daniel Mongrain), who possesses a wealth of jazz knowledge, has been described as a 'secret weapon'. Chewy has previously arranged music for VOIVOD's past projects and is instrumental in evolving their sound by incorporating diverse elements that promise to take listeners on a sonic journey.

When asked about the release timeline for the new album, Away commented, 'We have so many shows planned and so many projects in the works. I would say late next year [2027].' In addition to the new album, fans can look forward to a video game titled 'Nuclear Warrior', which draws from late '80s and early '90s aesthetics, with band members heavily involved in the creative process. From low-res art to character voiceovers, the game promises to be a unique extension of the VOIVOD universe.

There's more in store, as the band prepares for the premiere of their long-awaited documentary, 'We Are Connected', which chronicles their 40-plus-year journey in the metal scene. This film dives deep into VOIVOD’s legacy, showcasing their evolution and influence in the heavy metal genre. As Away reflects on his 43 years with the band, he expresses gratitude for the loyal fanbase that continues to support them: 'I've dedicated my life to VOIVOD for 43 years now, and it's pretty fun to be able to release all of these projects.'

With the impending release of 'Symphonique', a live album that features a meticulously curated setlist of VOIVOD classics, recorded in front of a live audience, the heavy metal titans are proving once again that they remain at the forefront of innovation and creativity in the genre.
