TYPE O NEGATIVE Resurrects the Past: New Concert Recording and Unreleased Tracks on the Horizon
In a recent interview with Loaded Radio's Scott Penfold, TYPE O NEGATIVE’s legendary guitarist Kenny Hickey peeled back the shroud on the long-awaited concert recording from the now-mythical band. The meticulous Hickey is putting the finishing touches on the editing process, preparing to hand over the raw energy of their live performance to none other than Mike Marciano, the original mixer who first infused life into their iconic sound. Hickey revealed, “I’m almost done editing everything, getting everything compiled together and simplified,” indicating that the release is imminent, with a hopeful target set for the first quarter of next year.
However, don't expect this to just drop out of nowhere. Hickey noted the importance of proper preparation, stating, “You can’t just release it when it’s done, obviously. You need three months to set it up properly.” This includes a vinyl pressing—a laborious process that can test even the most patient of metalheads. The anticipation is palpable, as this concert recording promises to encapsulate the dark, brooding essence that TYPE O NEGATIVE embodied live.
But that’s not all, folks. Hickey also unveiled plans to unleash a previously unreleased gem from the band’s archives—a track titled “Prometheus,” unearthed by drummer Johnny Kelly from a dusty cassette tape. Hickey chuckled, recalling, “I don’t remember it at all... but it’s really cool.” This lost piece of history is set to be released in conjunction with upcoming reissues, giving old-school fans and newcomers alike a taste of what could have been.
Johnny Kelly further elaborated on the origins of “Prometheus,” explaining that during the days of cassette demos, the band often cannibalized ideas, with parts of this very song reappearing in other tracks. He mused about the song's strength—or lack thereof—at the time, yet acknowledged its worthiness for a modern release as a bonus track, especially now that the band celebrates the 30th anniversary of their seminal album, “October Rust.”
This year marks a bittersweet remembrance for TYPE O NEGATIVE, a band that forged a legacy through darkness and despair, only to see their journey cut short with the tragic passing of frontman Peter Steele in 2010. As the band’s sound resonates with new generations, it seems the ghosts of the past are here to haunt us once more, reminding us of their undeniable impact on the metal landscape.
As the anticipation builds, one can only hope that Hickey and the surviving members will continue to honor Steele’s legacy with fine-tuned precision and respect, delivering the heavy, unrelenting sound that echoed through the hearts of a generation.
