Dave Mustaine Unleashes the Truth Behind MEGADETH's Latest Album Collaborations

The thrash titan reveals the collaborative essence of 'Megadeth' in a gritty podcast chat.

In a revealing conversation on the 'Talk Is Jericho' podcast, hosted by the legendary Chris Jericho of FOZZY fame, MEGADETH frontman Dave Mustaine peeled back the layers on the band's latest self-titled album. The iconic guitarist delved into the songwriting process, shedding light on the significant contributions of lead guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari, who has been a force in the band's dynamic for the past three years. Mustaine candidly stated, 'Just because somebody has some credit on a record doesn't mean that they wrote a lot of it,' emphasizing the collaborative nature of their work while downplaying the intricacies of songwriting credits.

Mustaine's perspective on what makes a good MEGADETH riff is as unfiltered as the man himself. 'It’s one of those things you feel, you hear,' he explained, likening the experience to the visceral reaction one has when a riff grabs you by the throat. He painted a vivid picture of combing through albums in search of that one killer riff that makes it all worthwhile, showing that for him, it's about the gut punch rather than the technical details.

Continuing his thoughts, Mustaine drew a comparison to the songwriting dynamics of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, highlighting the critical role of their bassist, Robert DeLeo, as a connector of ideas. 'You need to hook up with somebody who's gonna put the two pieces together,' he noted, acknowledging the necessity of collaboration in crafting memorable music. This openness to collaboration is a hallmark of MEGADETH's evolution, with Mustaine openly welcoming contributions from all members, including drummer Dirk Verbeuren and bassist James LoMenzo.

Teemu Mäntysaari himself shared his insights into the creative process during an interview with Chaoszine earlier this year. He recounted the surprise of being included so deeply in the songwriting, noting how the band systematically reviewed their entire catalog for inspiration. Their pre-production phase was marked by a thorough exploration of MEGADETH's musical history, which served as a launchpad for their new ideas. Together, they jammed, riffed, and built upon snippets of inspiration, leading to the creation of some of the album's most powerful tracks.

The synergy in the studio was palpable, with a setup designed for both recording and live jamming, allowing the energy to flow freely. 'We just sat down and maybe had a little snippet of an idea,' Mäntysaari explained, showcasing how collaborative spontaneity was key to their songwriting process. As they navigated the creative waters, it became clear that this collective input would shape the album's identity, solidifying MEGADETH's status as a powerhouse of thrash innovation.
