Ian Hill Bows Out: The End of an Era for Judas Priest

By Jason •
Heavy metal legends bid farewell to their original bassist as he steps into retirement, paving the way for new blood.

In a somber yet respectful announcement, UK metal titans Judas Priest have revealed that original bassist Ian Hill is hanging up his axe, marking the end of an era for one of the genre's most iconic bands. The band expressed their heartfelt sentiments, stating, 'It is with heavy hearts that we are sending out this personal message from our Ian….he has been the backbone of Judas Priest for so long and will be greatly missed by us all.' As the band welcomes Davey Rimmer into the fold, fans are left to reflect on Hill's monumental contributions to the heavy metal landscape.

In his own words, Hill opened up about the toll that years of relentless touring have taken on his body. 'For a long time now, when asked “How long can you continue?” I’ve always answered “Until my performances suffer.” I hate to say it, but that time has come,' he lamented. The bassist has been battling advanced arthritis, which has taken a significant toll on his left shoulder and both knees, ultimately leading to the decision to retire after an illustrious fifty-seven-year career.

The final straw came during a recent European tour when Hill suffered a snapped tendon in his left shoulder, forcing him to call on Rimmer for support at the last minute for the London show. 'Davey put in an incredible performance at such short notice!' Hill said, indicating not only the challenges he's faced but also the caliber of talent stepping into his shoes.

As Hill prepares to step away from the spotlight, he made it clear that family time has taken precedence in his life after decades of dedication to the band. 'I’ve neglected my family life for fifty-seven years; I’ve decided to retire and spend the remaining years making up for it,' he shared, a sentiment that resonates deeply in a community that values both family and the art of metal.

With Hill's retirement, Davey Rimmer is set to join Judas Priest starting in their 2027 touring cycle, a coveted position in a legacy band that continues to shape the heavy metal genre. Rimmer will also continue to perform with Uriah Heep throughout 2026, with further announcements on additional replacements expected as the Priest machine rolls on into the future.
