I Am Your God Salutes Sentenced with a Raw Cover of 'Farewell'
In a thunderous homage to the legends of Finnish metal, I Am Your God has unleashed their fiercely reimagined cover of Sentenced’s haunting anthem, “Farewell.” This release, which dropped on October 1, 2026, marks precisely 21 years since Sentenced delivered their final, tear-stained performance at Club Teatria in Oulu, Finland. With this fourth single from the upcoming EP, Foregods, set to drop on November 20, 2026, the band pays tribute to the forefathers of extreme metal while keeping the spirit of Sentenced alive.
Sentenced carved an indelible mark in the annals of Finnish metal history with their unique blend of melodic melancholy and dark humor. Their theatrical farewell was nothing short of legendary, and “Farewell,” taken from their 2005 swansong, The Funeral Album, encapsulates the essence of their artistry—gothic heaviness entwined with deep melodies and a haunting resignation that clings to the listener’s soul long after the final note fades. I Am Your God channels this emotional weight with a modern twist that demands attention.
At the heart of this cover lies a personal connection. Vocalist Julius Vetämäjärvi, enamored with the distinctiveness of Sentenced's sound and narrative, championed “Farewell” for the Foregods project. He wanted to honor a band whose artistry diverged dramatically from their own melodeath roots. “Sentenced has always been a beacon for many of us,” Vetämäjärvi reflects. “Their super melodic and melancholic world, mixed with a dark sense of humor, is utterly unique. The choice of 'Farewell' was to add versatility to our EP while paying tribute to a legacy that deserves to be remembered.”
The choice of the release date is deliberate—a poignant nod to the memory of Sentenced, who left the stage at Club Teatria on October 1, 2005. This tribute doesn’t just serve as a cover; it’s a declaration of respect for a band that shaped the landscape of Finnish metal.
Foregods will feature five tracks from five bands that form the DNA of I Am Your God’s sound, including Children Of Bodom, In Flames, Sentenced, and Dissection, alongside the classic heavyweights, Iron Maiden. Each band member contributed a selection, resulting in a diverse EP that stands as both a tribute and a testament to their artistic identity.
