Tony Iommi Emerges From The Shadows with New Solo Album 'From The Dark'
In a revealing chat with Brent Porche from Philadelphia's 93.3 WMMR, the titan of heavy metal, Tony Iommi, shared the details of his forthcoming solo album, "From The Dark," set to unleash its sonic fury on October 23 via BMG. After a 21-year hiatus from solo endeavors, Iommi’s excitement is palpable. He recounted, "I've been busy doing a lot of other stuff, of course, when we were doing the SABBATH thing," emphasizing that this project was a labor of love, free from the pressures typically associated with SABBATH's tight schedules.
Joining Iommi on this venture is the powerhouse vocalist Jorn Lande, who not only lends his voice but also contributes to writing across all tracks. With the rhythmic prowess of bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil rounding out the lineup, this album promises to be a collaboration steeped in heavy metal history. Co-produced with longtime collaborator Mike Exeter, Iommi stated, "I've been able to do it when I want," highlighting the creative freedom that this project has afforded him.
The album's title, "From The Dark," encapsulates its ominous vibe, a concept that evolved from Jorn's lyrical contributions paired with Iommi's iconic riffs. Reflecting on Lande's vocal appeal, Iommi reminisced about their previous collaboration during the Dio tribute, where Lande's voice shone on SABBATH classics. "It just seemed ideal," he remarked, hinting at a synergy that fans expect will resonate throughout the album.
As for the songwriting process, Iommi maintained his tried-and-true method—laying down ideas, then collaborating with Lande, who was flown in from Sweden for the creative sessions. "I started doing an instrumental album," Iommi explained, before pivoting towards a full-fledged vocal project. This organic evolution has led to a relaxed recording atmosphere, allowing Iommi to refine and live with his ideas without the pressures of touring or deadlines.
"From The Dark" is set to be available in multiple deluxe vinyl and CD formats, with a double LP edition featuring a stunning die-cut of Iommi's signature cross. The album's first two singles, "World Alone" and "Stormwatcher," have already begun to stir excitement among the metal faithful. As the founding father of BLACK SABBATH and a revered figure in heavy metal, Iommi's latest offering is not just an album; it's a testament to his enduring legacy and a beacon of creativity in a genre that continues to evolve.
