DREAM THEATER Launches Into New Era: A Sequel to 'Parasomnia' on the Horizon

Progressive metal titans DREAM THEATER embark on the next chapter with a fresh album in the works.

In a thrilling revelation, progressive metal behemoths DREAM THEATER have officially kicked off the creative engine for their upcoming album, a follow-up to the ambitious 'Parasomnia', which hit the shelves in February 2025. The band shared a tantalizing glimpse into their studio life today, posting a photo of the full lineup at Ytse Jam Studios with the cryptic caption: "#DT17 is underway…" A clear signal that the wheels of innovation are turning once again.

In a candid conversation with Brazilian journalist Igor Miranda back in May, frontman James LaBrie elaborated on their creative process, emphasizing the importance of personal experiences and collective inspiration in shaping the next sonic chapter. "Whenever we approach a new album, it's about where we are in life, what inspires us, and what we want the next iteration of DREAM THEATER to represent," LaBrie mused. Each member brings their own ideas to the table, setting the stage for a collaborative explosion of creativity.

As the current world tour takes precedence, LaBrie hinted at an anticipated timeline: the band will return to the writing and recording phase in late 2026 or early 2027. "We’re focused on this tour until mid-May, then we’ll take a breather before diving into the next project. Ideally, we’d hit the road again with new material in late 2027 or early 2028," he noted, though he cautioned that these plans are still fluid.

Drummer Mike Portnoy, who made a triumphant return to the band in 2023, echoed LaBrie’s sentiments during a recent interview. He acknowledged the extensive touring schedule that has kept the band on the road for over a year, emphasizing the importance of a well-deserved break before plunging into the next album. "Once the tour cycle wraps up in spring 2026, we’ll likely take the summer off before starting on new music," Portnoy stated, underscoring the band’s commitment to quality and depth in their artistry.

Since Portnoy's return, the band has reignited their live performances with an epic set that includes the entirety of 'Parasomnia' and the revered 'A Change Of Seasons'. Their upcoming concert in Santiago, Chile, set for April 22, 2026, promises to be a monumental event, as it will be professionally recorded for a future Blu-ray release. Additionally, last November saw the release of 'Quarantième: Live À Paris', a celebration of their storied career, featuring tracks that span their vast discography.

With 'Parasomnia' boasting a staggering 71-minute runtime and intricate compositions, the anticipation for what DREAM THEATER will conjure next is palpable. As the band continues to carve their legacy, fans are left on the edge of their seats, eager for the next sonic journey that awaits.
