“Old nihilistic punk rock, but doom.†So frontman Justin Godfrey describes his Molotov cocktail of a band, The Abominable Iron Sloth.
On AIS’s second full-length, The Id Will Overcome, raw, intense anthems rear their heads up out of feedback swells, like violent storms exploding out of thick Pacific Northwest gloom. With minimal tools - filthy guitars, primal drums, and unnerving vocals that convey true horror - AIS create brief, majestic epics that force heads to bang and teeth to gnash. Imagine the infectious simplicity of early Nirvana and the unhinged gut-spilling of Eyehategod.
Once featuring three members of Will Haven (Jeff Irwin, Mitch Wheeler, and Mike Martin), AIS is now comprised of Godfrey, drummer Andre Sanabria, and bassist Aubrey Debauchery. Sanabria is also known as the man behind digital grind act Blowupnihilist.
Sanabria states that The Id Will Overcome is inspired by the band's "disdain for humanity and what humanity, as a virus, has done to the planet." Godfrey adds: "I spend a lot of time thinking about how the world will end." Fittingly, "Big Iron Door" is a cover of a Charles Manson song.
The Id Will Overcome was recorded at Headbanging Kill Your Mama Music in Louisville, KY with Chris Owens of Lords (Coliseum, Akimbo, Young Widows.) The album was mastered by Nick Zampiello (Torche, Gaza) at New Alliance. The cover art was created by Matt Loomis (shirt and poster designs for High On Fire, The Red Chord, Mastodon.)
The Id Will Overcome is AIS’s Black Market Activiies debut. The first, self-titled album was released in 2006 on Goodfellow Records.
