Eternal Madness, the most outstanding band to have come out of the 3rd world in over 10 years. Their first release "Offerings to Rangda" was filled with heavy guitar driven songs constructed using the rhythms, scales and structures of Balinese gamelan music. They derive inspiration and write songs about powerful spiritually driven occasions such as Palebon (ritual cremation) and Mecaru (sacrificial offering) but this is no cheap sensationalist "bite the head off the dove trick". E.M live in a culture where these rituals can be seen daily in temples, in homes and on the street, where lost souls and black magic are everyday realities to be fully aware and totally repectful of.
Tonight I watch Eternal Madness make a small offering before going on stage, a gift to the spirit that follows them and the spirits residing at the places they play. They deliver a killer set of new material, totally blowing away the 3000 or more people who've come to see them. Moel - who sings and plays bass - wears an Army Tshirt with Runtag (a paralyzing fear, or shock) sprayed across the front of it. In a land where the army is rteknown for acts of hard core, manipulalative violence the effect of this hand written message is not lost on any of the audience. "Yeah", says Moel - (laughing), "army people see this and they get angry, they tried to arrest me. They really dont like it".
