Little is known about latest MORIBUND CULT signees FEAR OF ETERNITY. But such mystery only heightens the enigmatic expanses of the band's CULT debut, Toward the Castle.
What is known about Fear of Eternity, then? The band began in Italy in the year 2000. Andrea Tilenni is the only member. He plays all instruments on Toward the Castle. He produced the album himself. The album was written over the past four years. He allegedly has three other albums recorded. His previous experience includes a stint with Sinoath, drumming on the album Research. But that is all.
Toward the Castle is both out of step with the times and yet postmodern. On one level, the album recalls the deeply occult atmospheres of black metal's unjustly forgotten wave of the early '90s. Mortuary Drape, Necromantia, Mystifier, Varathron, Root, Samael - all non-Norse cults who let their music do the talking rather than teenage antics. Plodding yet portentous, patient yet persistent, Toward the Castle similarly explores arcane truths, enveloping the listener in a musty fog of mysticism and spellbinding ever so subtly. On another level, Toward the Castle is utterly antithetical to the post-Darkthrone age of concertedly physical black metal. It weaves clandestine spells of its own volition, not one blastbeat nor thrashing uptempo to be found, and ghostly synths to the fore. Even with the current resurgence of one-man black metal "bands," the album is quite unlike anything else on offer. It stands cold, alone, confident.
In fact, FEAR OF ETERNITY is so ahead of the times, mainman Tilenni is standing behind you. Pretenders, watch your backs.
