FEAR FACTORY Unleashes 'Roboticist': A New Era or Just the Same Old Grind?

Dino Cazares reflects on the band’s latest single and the evolution of their sound with fresh blood in the lineup.

In a recent no-holds-barred interview with GRIMM Gent, Dino Cazares, the stalwart guitarist of FEAR FACTORY, dissected the band’s latest single, "Roboticist," unleashed in late August via Nuclear Blast. This track not only marks a significant moment in the band’s evolution but also serves as the first taste of the new dynamics brought by vocalist Milo Silvestro and drummer Pete Webber, who have been holding down the fort on tour for over three and a half years. Cazares reminisced about the song's genesis, rooted in an instrumental demo he crafted three years back while promoting his plugin, the Toneforge Disruptor.

"Roboticist" is a sonic tapestry woven from a palette of tones—clean, lo-fi, distorted, and everything in between—crafted to showcase the plugin’s capabilities. Cazares thought the track was a gem instrumentally, but it was Silvestro's vocal delivery that truly transformed it. "When Milo came in and sang the hook, I knew we had something special on our hands. It was time to let it out into the world," he stated. The arrangement saw a clever reworking, shifting the midsection to the end while Cazares now flexes his eight-string guitar prowess, a signature model from Kiesel, in place of the original dual-guitar setup.

The metal community has been buzzing with mixed reactions to the single, with some diehards expressing shock at how "Roboticist" resonates with the classic FEAR FACTORY sound, despite the lineup changes. Dino, however, is unfazed by the chatter, asserting, "FEAR FACTORY is my style. You can’t please everyone. You put it out and hope for the best." He is unabashedly proud of the new track and the upcoming full-length record, promising a diverse soundscape that retains the quintessential FEAR FACTORY essence while exploring new avenues.

Diving deeper into the lyrical concepts of the forthcoming album, Cazares reaffirmed the band’s longstanding fascination with the sci-fi theme of man versus machine—a narrative that has been their bread and butter since the days of "Soul Of A New Machine." He explained, "It’s about the relationship between man and technology. We’ve always explored this concept, and as artificial intelligence continues to evolve, our lyrics will reflect that ongoing dialogue." With a nod to the present-day implications of A.I., Cazares hinted that the lyrical content will delve into the nuances of this relationship, blending familiar themes with fresh perspectives.

As for the album's overarching message, Dino kept the details tantalizingly vague but hinted at a profound exploration of A.I.’s role in our lives, from social media algorithms to the artistic landscape. "We’ve let A.I. into our lives, and it’s reshaping everything—from how we create art to how we interact with the world. It's a double-edged sword, and we’ll be tackling those intricacies in our upcoming work,” he concluded, leaving fans eager for more as they gear up for what promises to be another heavy chapter in the FEAR FACTORY saga.
