MASTODON Unleashes Bone-Chilling Vinyl Variant for 'Marrow Deep'

By Jason •
Atlanta's progressive metal titans take their artistry to the next level with a one-of-a-kind LP featuring real fossilized mastodon teeth.

In a groundbreaking move that perfectly embodies the spirit of heavy metal innovation, MASTODON has unleashed what could be the most unique vinyl variant the music world has ever seen. Their latest album, 'Marrow Deep', now features actual fossilized mastodon teeth ground into dust, making it a collector's dream and a testament to the band's unyielding creativity.

This extraordinary concept was born from a fan's thoughtful gift of non-display-worthy fossils two decades ago. With the album's title and themes aligning so perfectly with the ancient relics, bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders envisioned a way to press these bones into a record. After persistent inquiries to pressing plants worldwide, the band found a willing partner in Waxworks Records, collaborating with the geology department at the University of Georgia to ensure the bone dust wouldn't compromise the record's sound quality.

In a hands-on approach that speaks volumes about their dedication, the band personally visited the vinyl plant to sprinkle the ground bone dust into each copy of the limited edition pressing. A behind-the-scenes video shared on their socials captures this unique process, allowing fans to witness the creation of these macabre masterpieces.

With only 170 copies available, this limited pressing is set to be released through an exclusive draw format, giving every fan a fair shot at owning a piece of heavy metal history. Interested collectors can register now for a chance to snag one of these rare gems.

Currently, MASTODON is tearing up the stage on their 'The Poisonous Weapons' tour, supported by the likes of DEAFHEAVEN and ALCEST. Their nationwide trek hits the Hollywood Palladium tomorrow, winding through the country before wrapping up on October 24 at Sick New World in Dallas. 'Marrow Deep', released on August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings, marks a significant chapter for the band as it is their first full-length album without the late guitarist Brent Hinds, who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident in 2025.

The album showcases new guitarist Nick Johnston and includes significant contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira. The powerful second single, 'Snakes For Dinner', features a guest appearance from QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE's Josh Homme, who previously collaborated with MASTODON on the iconic track 'Colony Of Birchmen'. In a recent documentary titled 'The Mastodon In The Room', Sanders, drummer Brann Dailor, and guitarist Bill Kelliher reflect on Hinds' legacy, ensuring that his story resonates with fans amidst the media frenzy surrounding his untimely death.
