Barry Kerch on the Alchemy of SHINEDOWN: The Unique Bond Behind the Beats

In a revealing chat, SHINEDOWN's drummer sheds light on the unbreakable chemistry that fuels their explosive sound.

In a recent revelation on The Ty Sherrell Show, SHINEDOWN's powerhouse drummer, Barry Kerch, opened up about the undeniable magic that exists between him and his bandmates. "There’s a magic between the four of us," he declared, emphasizing that while he might not claim the title of 'best drummer in the world', he firmly believes he is the 'best drummer for SHINEDOWN.' This profound connection was put to the test during the COVID lockdown when guest drummer Dustin Steinke filled in. Despite Steinke’s undeniable skill, Kerch noted, "It didn’t feel right"—a testament to the unique synergy they've cultivated over the years.

Kerch’s candidness didn't stop there. He tackled preconceived notions about his lifestyle, dismissing the myth that rock stars live in luxury. "I’m very simple," he stated, revealing that he’s not swathed in opulence but rather enjoys a modest life filled with family, hunting, and fishing. The drummer’s humility shines through as he reflects on his upbringing and the close-knit family that shaped him into the man he is today.

Adding a layer of complexity to the band's dynamic, bassist Eric Bass recently announced he would be stepping back from the touring circuit to prioritize his mental health. Kerch acknowledged the challenges of having fill-in members, asserting that while they may play the parts flawlessly, it’s the original chemistry that creates the true magic on stage. With Josh Sturm from KAIROS and Zack Mack stepping in, the band continues its North American tour, bringing their latest album, 'Dance, Kid, Dance Act II,' to life.

Barry’s journey began when he first laid hands on a snare drum at the tender age of seven, a pivotal moment that ignited his passion for music. His early years were defined by rigorous training, a stint in marching bands, and a degree in anthropology from the University of Central Florida. Since joining SHINEDOWN in 2000, alongside original member and frontman Brent Smith, Kerch has become an integral part of their identity, forging not only a sound but a brotherhood that continues to resonate with fans across the globe.
