MASTODON Welcomes Geezer Butler: A Dream Collaboration Takes Shape

By Jason
Troy Sanders opens up about the thrill of working with BLACK SABBATH's legendary bassist on their new album, 'Marrow Deep'.

In a recent interview that dripped with nostalgia and reverence, MASTODON's bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders sat down with Iain McCallum of Australia's 'I Was Gonna Ask About That' to discuss a collaboration that has metalheads buzzing. This time, the spotlight shines on the iconic Geezer Butler, co-founder of BLACK SABBATH, who recorded the bass intro for MASTODON's haunting new track 'The Vanishing' from their forthcoming album 'Marrow Deep'. Sanders described the experience as a euphoric blast from the past, saying, 'We all did, and we all still do feel like kids again.'

Reflecting on the monumental moment, Troy recounted how it all came together, “What a cool moment,” he declared, reminiscing about the band's shared history with BLACK SABBATH. Their paths first crossed back in 2005 during Ozzfest, where the connection was solidified. Sanders recalled being starstruck when Butler acknowledged MASTODON in his autobiography, and the excitement only grew when they were invited to the 'Back To The Beginning' event in Birmingham last year. “To have the guy who penned some of the most influential lyrics in metal on our album is beyond surreal,” he added, hinting at the surreal nature of the collaboration.

When discussing the influence of guest musicians, Sanders articulated a profound respect for his peers, highlighting that every collaboration is steeped in inspiration and friendship. “If we’ve been inspired by you, we write a part that sounds like, ‘Oh, hey, that sounds like Neil Fallon from CLUTCH. Let’s ask him,’” he explained. This collaborative spirit is a testament to the unity and respect that permeates the heavy music scene, making these moments not just personal milestones, but communal celebrations of metal's rich tapestry.

Butler's contribution to 'Marrow Deep' was recorded remotely, which presented its own challenges. “Everything went through management,” Sanders explained, revealing the bittersweet reality of never having met Butler in person. However, there's hope on the horizon; the band is eyeing their upcoming U.S. tour as a potential opportunity to finally connect face to face and complete the circle. “If we can actually sit down together, that’ll complete the whole circle,” he expressed with palpable anticipation.

Set to drop on August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings, 'Marrow Deep' not only features Butler but also boasts contributions from heavyweights like Nate Newton and Ben Koller of CONVERGE, Randy Blythe of LAMB OF GOD, Joe Duplantier of GOJIRA, and Neil Fallon of CLUTCH. This album marks a pivotal moment for MASTODON, being their first full-length effort without founding member Brent Hinds, whose tragic passing left an indelible mark on the band. As they gear up for 'The Poisonous Weapons Tour' with DEAFHEAVEN and ALCEST, fans can expect an emotional and powerful tribute to Hinds during their performances, with 'The Mastodon In The Room' documentary shedding light on their journey through grief and resilience.
