NEVERMORE Rises Again: A New Era Begins with Fresh Blood
In a recent interview with Germany's Moshpit Passion, guitar virtuoso Jeff Loomis unveiled the exciting new lineup of NEVERMORE, which made its electrifying debut on April 1 at the IF Performance Hall in Beşiktaş, Istanbul. Joining Loomis and drummer Van Williams are the formidable talents of Jack Cattoi on guitar, Semir Özerkan on bass, and the powerful new vocalist Berzan Önen. The stage is set for a fresh chapter in NEVERMORE's storied legacy.
As the band prepares to unleash new material, Loomis candidly shared insights into their creative journey. Having inked a deal with Reigning Phoenix Music earlier this year, he admitted, "I've got a late start on [working on new music]." The meticulous process of assembling the new lineup took precedence, but the creative juices are now flowing. "Van really wanted to get back on tour again... so it's kind of been backwards as we've approached this. But the demos are starting to flow a little bit," he stated, hinting at the promise of new tracks that could potentially shake the metal world.
With six ideas in various stages of development, Loomis is eager for Berzan to join him in the U.S. this November. "When you're writing something, man, in today's age, you can easily send demos back and forth via the Internet... but I ultimately love to work in person with people," he explained. The band is determined to utilize the next six months to craft the best album of their careers, with plans solidifying between October and March.
Discussing the selection of Berzan and Semir, Loomis emphasized their unique contributions to NEVERMORE's sound. "Berzan is his own person vocally... We want to give him that opportunity to be his own person and not just have to sing like what Warrel did," he stated, referencing the band's late frontman Warrel Dane. With meticulous auditions behind them, the band feels confident in their new members, hoping their fresh perspectives will help to elevate NEVERMORE's sound to new heights.
Reflecting on the absence of Warrel Dane, who tragically passed away in 2017, Loomis acknowledged the daunting challenge of replacing such an iconic figure. Yet, he remains optimistic: "If you can find the right people that can perform the songs in the correct way, it can be done... We weren't looking for a Warrel Dane clone either." With a commitment to preserving the essence of NEVERMORE while allowing new voices to shine, Loomis is ready to forge ahead.
Ultimately, the core sound of NEVERMORE remains intact, with Loomis and Williams at the helm. Yet, they are eager to encourage contributions from their new members. Loomis passionately concluded, "We want to have the other guys contribute as well... I don't really think [new members] will change the core sound of NEVERMORE. I think it's just gonna add to the dynamic and make it cool." The future is bright for NEVERMORE, and the metal community is undoubtedly ready to embrace this new era.
