The Obsessed Forge Ahead: Doom Legends Sign with Heavy Psych Sounds

By Jason
The architects of American doom metal are set to unleash a new album in 2027, promising a return to their heavy roots.

In a thunderous announcement that reverberates through the underground metal scene, The Obsessed, the iconic architects of American doom metal, have officially signed with Heavy Psych Sounds Records. This union promises a brand new album slated for release in 2027, alongside a few surprises that the band has yet to unveil. In true Obsessed fashion, they declared, “if it ain’t heavy, it ain’t shit!!”

Since their formation in 1978, The Obsessed have carved a niche in the annals of heavy music history, melding the raw energy of punk with the heavy riffs of doom. Spearheaded by the indomitable Scott “Wino” Weinrich, their distinctive sound and lyrical depth have resonated within the metal community, shaping the genre's evolution and influencing countless heavy rock bands.

The Obsessed emerged from the gritty Baltimore/DC scene in the 1980s, gaining momentum during the hardcore punk explosion. They became known as the band that bridged the chasm between punk and metal, earning respect from hardcore heavyweights like Black Flag and The Bad Brains. This fierce spirit has led many to dub them as “America’s Motorhead,” a testament to their relentless drive and undeniable influence.

Wino’s journey through the heavy music landscape has been legendary. After a stint with doom titans Saint Vitus, where he lent his voice to seminal albums like 'Born Too Late', he returned to The Obsessed in the early '90s with their self-titled debut and followed it up with classic records like 'Lunar Womb' and 'The Church Within'. These albums laid the groundwork for what we now recognize as the doom metal scene. Wino’s poetic prowess, combined with his heavy riffs, hits as hard as the music he creates.

After a hiatus following 'The Church Within', Wino's insatiable creativity birthed other acclaimed projects, including Spirit Caravan and Shrinebuilder. His return to The Obsessed in 2016 reignited the band’s fire, leading to relentless touring and the release of 2017’s 'Sacred', an album that marked their triumphant return to the world stage.

With new blood in the lineup, including Chris Angleberger on bass and Jason Taylor on guitar, The Obsessed have been tearing up venues and festivals across the globe. Their latest offering, 'Gilded Sorrow', released in early 2024, further solidified their place in heavy music history. Now, with the addition of drumming powerhouse Bob Pantella, The Obsessed embarks on a new chapter, poised to unleash their next sonic assault through Heavy Psych Sounds in 2027.
