SAXON Soars with New Album and Legendary Eagle's Return
The gods of British heavy metal, SAXON, are gearing up to unleash their 25th studio album, set to drop on January 22, 2027, under the banner of Silver Lining Music. Vocalist Biff Byford, in a candid chat with Classic Rock magazine, let slip some tantalizing details, notably the album's completion and the filming of two music videos. Despite a slight reprimand for revealing the release date, Byford hints at a pre-order launch this September, promising that the album title will soon be unveiled.
In response to drummer Nigel Glockler’s assertion that the new LP leans more towards groove, Biff offered his own perspective, stating, “I don’t think of it that way. It’s heavier, more than anything.” It seems the band’s sonic evolution is taking shape, with Byford underscoring that while Glockler may perceive the grooves, it’s the weight of the music that stands out.
The songwriting process saw the inclusion of guitarist Brian Tatler, who has become an integral part of SAXON's creative engine alongside Doug Scarratt. Biff acknowledged Tatler's contributions, asserting, “Brian brings a lot to the band,” while also noting the enduring legacy of original guitarist Paul Quinn. The fans have embraced Tatler, and it’s clear he’s earned his stripes within the SAXON ranks.
But it’s not just new music on the horizon; SAXON is also reviving their legendary “Gods Of Thunder” world tour, which will kick off with a UK and Ireland leg. Fans can expect the return of SAXON's iconic 30-foot mechanized Eagle, a symbol of their legacy, though Cardiff will miss out due to venue restrictions. The stage production promises to be a spectacle, reminiscent of their past glories with the celebrated “Castles & Eagles” theme, ensuring that no fan will leave disappointed.
This majestic Eagle, originally crafted in the early '80s for the “Denim And Leather” tour, has become synonymous with SAXON, soaring above audiences and cementing its place in metal history. It even inspired the title of their acclaimed live album, “The Eagle Has Landed.” The fans’ demand for its return speaks volumes about its iconic status.
As they prepare for the release of their latest album, the follow-up to 2024's “Hell, Fire And Damnation,” SAXON continues to forge ahead despite Byford's recent health battles. After a tough fight against bowel cancer and a heart procedure, Biff's resilience is a testament to the spirit of rock. With original members Biff and Quinn still standing strong, SAXON remains a powerhouse of heavy metal, having sold over 23 million albums and gifted the world classics like “Wheels Of Steel” and “Power And Glory.” Get ready, metalheads; SAXON is back and louder than ever.
