Metallica Revives Banned Tom Jones Classic During Cardiff Stadium Concert
Metallica surprised fans in Wales by performing a rendition of Tom Jones' classic "Delilah" during their concert at Cardiff's Principality Stadium—a venue where the song has been officially banned from rugby matchday entertainment since 2023.
The tribute came during the band's nightly "Kirk and Rob Doodle," a regular feature of the M72 World Tour in which guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo perform songs connected to the city they're visiting. In Cardiff, the pair selected one of Wales' most recognizable anthems, prompting thousands of fans to sing along.
"Delilah," originally released by Tom Jones in 1968, was removed from official Welsh Rugby Union playlists and choir performances after concerns were raised over the song's storyline, which depicts a jealous man killing his unfaithful partner. Stadium officials said the decision reflected the organization's stance against domestic violence, though supporters have continued singing the song from the stands despite the ban.
It remains unclear whether Metallica intended to make a statement by choosing the song or simply continued its tradition of honoring local musical icons. The restriction applies to rugby events, and there has been no indication that the band's concert performance violated any venue policy.
The Cardiff show also highlighted Metallica's charitable efforts. Ahead of the concert, the band's All Within My Hands Foundation donated £20,000 to Cardiff Foodbank, providing funding for thousands of meals after the charity warned its supplies were running critically low.
