Guitarist shares his battle with spinal stenosis and hints at a triumphant return to the stage.

In a raw and revealing chat with Australia's Metal Mal, METAL CHURCH's fearless six-string slinger, Kurdt Vanderhoof, opened up about the relentless back issues that led to the cancellation of the band's 2024 tour dates. The man is no stranger to pain, but he's on the mend, and it sounds like the fight is far from over. 'It's a process,' he admits, having recently found a reputable sports medicine expert in Phoenix. With the band rehearsing in the area, Kurdt made the trip, and after just one treatment, he already felt a wave of relief washing over him.

Kurdt's struggles have been brutal, to say the least. He's battling spinal stenosis, a condition that has left him feeling like a twisted wreck. 'I’m just one big knot,' he says, detailing how years of poor advice from various medical professionals have only exacerbated the issue. But now, with a doctor who knows how to crack the code, Kurdt is finding hope. 'It hurts like a mother,' he added, 'but your body knows that's what it needs.' The warrior spirit of a metal guitarist shines through as he embraces the pain in pursuit of wellness.

The return to the stage is imminent, especially after the band's triumphant debut with its revamped lineup at the San Luis Metal Fest in Mexico. Kurdt shared that the show went 'amazing,' but it was during the performance that he realized he needed to get back to his doctor. 'The first four or five songs were fine, but then the pain kicked in,' he recalled. Yet, the thrill of being back in front of the crowd was undeniable. 'It was a lot of fun after not being on stage for a couple of years to be out playing again,' he said, reflecting on the energy of the fest.

Kurdt also praised new vocalist Brian Allen, admitting he had his doubts before hearing him front the band. 'I was like, 'Okay. Well, there we go. Looks like we got ourselves a rock and roll band,' to quote Ted Nugent.' It’s clear that the chemistry is strong, and METAL CHURCH is ready to forge ahead, focusing on classics and a few fresh tracks from their new album, which is receiving rave reviews.

As the metal community anticipates the full return of METAL CHURCH, Kurdt's story is a testament to resilience. Fighting through pain, adapting to challenges, and reviving the spirit of heavy metal, he's gearing up to deliver a performance that fans won't forget. 'You can't get away from the classics,' he says, hinting at a setlist that will satisfy both old-school fans and newcomers alike. The battle may be hard-fought, but for Kurdt Vanderhoof, the music must go on.
