MOONSPELL Unleashes Dark Inspiration in Upcoming Album 'Far From God'

By Jason
The Portuguese dark metal titans dive deep into vampiric themes and artistic rebirth ahead of their July release.

In a recent sit-down with Neeka Rogers from Metal Nation, MOONSPELL's formidable frontman, Fernando Ribeiro, laid bare the churning depths of creativity that birthed their forthcoming opus, 'Far From God'. Set to drop on July 3 via Napalm Records, this album channels not only the desolate darkness that defines the band's legacy but also the tumultuous journey of artistic rediscovery following their 2021 release, 'Hermitage'.

Ribeiro candidly admitted to a creative drought post-'Hermitage', a period where he even contemplated pivoting to literary pursuits through his own label, Alma Mater Books & Records. He described how inspiration often finds the artist rather than the other way around, saying, “It’s not 'seek and you shall find'. Sometimes we search our whole lives for that spark.” In a world rife with superficial interpretations of gothic themes, it was the haunting vision of Robert Eggers’s 'Nosferatu' that rekindled Ribeiro's passion for the tragic narratives that lie at the heart of vampiric lore.

“Finally, someone got it again that Dracula or Nosferatu are just a man and a woman,” he reflected, envisioning a narrative that transcends the supernatural to explore the very essence of love and loss. This thematic exploration is poised to usher in a new era for MOONSPELL, blending gothic elegance with the raw intensity that their fans crave. Ribeiro's introspection drew parallels with the creative process described by author Margaret Atwood, comparing it to driving in the dark; each step revealing more of the path ahead.

As they emerged from this soul-searching phase, the band began to crystallize their vision, slowly piecing together the soundscape of 'Far From God'. The first single, a title track that serves as a “hymn to tragic vampiric love,” has already set the stage, characterized by its dense guitars, evocative vocals, and lush keyboards that expand the atmospheric tension without diluting its heavy roots. Ribeiro's return to the theme of vampiric love marks a significant revival for the genre, as he laments how the essence of gothic metal had slipped into mediocrity.

“I lost my faith and hope in vampires for quite a few years,” he confessed, “until Eggers brought us back to that tragic, romantic character.” This raw energy and fervor inform every note of 'Far From God', a cathartic reclaiming of gothic metal that promises to resonate with the genre's true essence, evoking the peril and passion that befits the vampire mythos. As MOONSPELL prepares to unveil their latest creation, one thing is certain: the darkness is far from extinguished.
