Harrowing best describes the epic, operatic, and invested soundscape from Seattle’s Eye of Nix; the quintet’s debut LP, Moros, infuses Blackened Sludge riffs with a pummeling percussive undercurrent for a tumultuous, intense, intoxicating, and downright imaginative mix of subgenres, sounding searing and sophisticated.
Eye of Nix’s adventurous aural sojourn is forged by the collaboration of veteran Pacific Northwest musicians—vocalist Joy Von Spain, drummer Justin Straw (Same-Sex Dictator), guitarist Nicholas Martinez, bassist Gerald Hansen, and noise artist Masaaki Masao. The band released Moros earlier this year to critical acclaim for the album’s ripened and creative moments of bleakness, and for its stirring, quiet-calm dynamics. Von Spain’s vocal performance is perhaps most often noted—her soprano vibrato is heard in clear, chilling calls over the roughened tremolos of Doom-driven disquietude throughout the album. A careful amalgamate of discernable influences—from Black Metal to Alternative—amasses a staggering sum of sounds, which coalesce into six songs that are simply impressive. Eye of Nix plans to re-issue Moros digitally with two previously unheard bonus tracks—“Blood In The Fire†and “Rome Burnedâ€â€”on November 6th via the Eye of Nix bandcamp.com page (EyeofNix.BandCamp.com).
