Gold: No Image
“For me, being forward thinking [means] freeing yourself from norms, expectations, and conventions,†replied Gold guitarist Thomas Sciarone when asked to define his Rotterdam-based band’s ‘forward-thinking’ songwriting approach on their new full-length album, No Image. “We wanted No Image to be an album free of all of those, [but still] emotional and vulnerable.â€
In hindsight, ‘forward thinking’ is understated praise for what the band’s achieved on No Image—‘radical’ is a little more accurate: boasting “post-everything â€effusive Dark Rock, No Image features ten textural and harmony-driven tunes capped by Gold’s evolved musical identity.
“We wanted No Image to be primal, emotional, and yet intelligent and surprising,†Thomas said. “In the core, [however], we are just a Rock band with traditional instruments.â€
Gold was founded in 2011 by guitarist Thomas Sciarone and vocalist Milena Eva (named after Franz Kafka’s lover), and the duo conspired for Gold to stand as a “monument to civilization’s decline.†Sonically, the band achieved this on their debut album, Interbellum, but it’s on No Image that Gold’s involved philosophy takes shape as an approachable, cultivated, and inspired work.
“It’s an album that’s not directly comparable to anything else,†said Sciarone. “I think it’s quite an achievement in the current Rock scene—this one’s for the radicals, not the die-hards.â€
