Erik Grönwall Reflects on SKID ROW's Legacy and Future Ambitions

By Jason
The former frontman opens up about his journey with SKID ROW and his evolving solo career.

In a gritty new interview with Rock Radio UK TV, Erik Grönwall, the man who took the reins of SKID ROW for their latest effort, 'The Gang's All Here', gives a candid glimpse into his experience with the band. Released in October 2022 via earMUSIC, Grönwall shares that he feels the album resonates with the classic SKID ROW sound he grew up idolizing. 'I didn't have anything to do with the writing on that album, but when they sent me the songs, it sounded like the SKID ROW that I grew up listening to. And, yeah, I love that album.'

Grönwall reflects on the shadow cast by previous frontman Sebastian Bach, admitting that his teenage years were spent trying to emulate the iconic vocalist. 'When I started singing, I wanted to sound like Bon Scott, Sebastian Bach, Robert Plant...all these great singers,' he confesses. He acknowledges the nostalgia fans hold for the original lineup but remains proud of what he and the band accomplished together.

Now, with his sights set on personal artistry, Grönwall is pivoting away from being a 'gun for hire'. His latest solo record, 'Bad Bones', released on May 22, represents a new chapter. 'The door is always open for Michael [Schenker],' he says, but emphasizes that his priority is now his own music. 'I just wanna keep writing. I wanna tour as much as possible, but it also has to make sense.'

Despite facing significant health challenges, including a diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in March 2021, Grönwall remains undeterred. In March 2024, he announced his departure from SKID ROW, citing the difficulty in managing his health alongside the demands of touring. The band expressed pride in their collaboration and wished him well on his journey to recovery.

As Grönwall forges ahead, he continues to build a legacy that blends the raw power of classic metal with his own unique vision, proving that in the world of heavy metal, the spirit of resilience is unwavering.
