Sacred Reich Dives Into Darkness with New Album 'Into The Abyss'

In a riveting conversation with Dionysis Metallourgos of Metalourgio, Sacred Reich's bassist and vocalist Phil Rind laid bare the details of the band's much-anticipated new album, 'Into The Abyss'. Scheduled for release through Metal Blade Records, this marks the first full-length offering since 2019's 'Awakening'. The band has ventured into the depths of The Focusrite Room in Mesa, Arizona for recording, with production duties helmed by John Aquilino alongside the band itself, and a mixing job from the legendary Bill Metoyer.

This upcoming album represents a pivotal moment for Sacred Reich, featuring new drummer Eduardo Baldo, who stepped into the role after the departure of longtime drummer Dave McClain last fall. Notably, McClain laid down the drum tracks for 'Into The Abyss' before his exit, making this album a bridge between old and new. Rind acknowledged the contributions of guitarist Joey Radziwill, who has been the main architect of the album's songwriting, stating, 'I was working on a few new songs, but when we heard what Joey was doing, we scrapped those and went with Joey's songs. It gave us a different direction. It is much faster and heavier.'

Delving deeper into the album's themes, Rind reflected on the tumultuous period since 'Awakening', hinting at personal struggles that resonate across the band's lyrics. 'Into The Abyss' is not just a title; it encapsulates the band's journey into the unknown, navigating through darkness. Rind explained, 'It’s much darker musically and lyrically. There are a few optimistic songs which is important so we remember that this too shall pass.' This duality of despair and hope is set to strike a chord with fans who have endured their own battles.

When discussing McClain's exit, Rind was straightforward: 'It was time for a change. Our new drummer Eduardo Baldo is a beast! Can't wait for you to see him.' Baldo, a Brazilian powerhouse previously of RED DEVIL VORTEX, made a formidable impression during the band’s European shows back in November 2025. The band’s enthusiasm for Baldo is palpable, as they welcomed him with open arms, stating, 'He's a great dude and fit right in with us.'

As for McClain, his departure was amicable, with the drummer revealing on social media that he decided to move on while remaining active in music. His legacy with Sacred Reich is undeniable, having been part of the band during their formative years in the early '90s and rejoining to record 'Awakening'. With 'Into The Abyss', Sacred Reich is poised to carve out a new chapter, bringing forth a sound that promises to resonate with the thrash metal community.
