Mortal Sin: Thrash Titans Rise Again With New Plans and Festival Fever
In a raw and electrifying interview with Heavy, Mat Maurer, the powerhouse vocalist of Australian thrash metal stalwarts MORTAL SIN, unveiled the band’s ambitious plans for the future after their triumphant return to the stage earlier this year. Nearly 15 years after their last tour during the 2011 'Thrashfest Classics' European run, the reunited lineup is ready to unleash their fury upon the masses once again. Original members Maurer and bassist Andy Eftichiou are joined by guitarists Nathan Shea and Ryan Huthnance, alongside the latest addition, the formidable drummer George Delinicolis, known for his work with LIVEWIRE and BASTARDIZER.
In a candid moment, Mat revealed, "We've got offers for some festivals for next year, some really big festivals. We had a good time. We didn't kill each other. We enjoyed each other's company." It's this camaraderie that fuels their fire as they look to the future, with a 95% certainty that new music is on the horizon. "We’ve been so busy that we haven’t really had time to sit down and talk about what’s next. Once we finish our shows with FLOTSAM AND JETSAM in late September and early October, we’ll gather around a Christmas dinner to reflect on our journey and chart our course forward.
Reflecting on their recent European tour, Mat described it as a mere appetizer for the thrash feast to come. "It was about letting people know that we’re back. It’s gonna take time, but we’re ready to hit the ground running. Next year, we aim to conquer even bigger festivals, like Wacken Open Air in Germany. We must elevate our profile, as many still talk about us in the past tense. There’s a resurgence of interest, and we need to capitalize on that, especially during our upcoming shows where younger thrash fans might finally get a taste of MORTAL SIN live for the first time."
The challenge of writing new material that meets fan expectations looms large. Mat acknowledges, "It’s the same for every band. You’ve just gotta hope that you write something that they’ll love. The key is to write what you love. We need to craft a MORTAL SIN song, and that’s the essence of it. It’s a tough task, especially for me with the lyrics, but we’re ready to mix it all up and see what comes out after 15 long years since our last album.
MORTAL SIN’s recent live performances have reminded fans why they were once hailed as the next METALLICA, and with 2026 marking significant anniversaries for their seminal albums, including 40 years of 'Mayhemic Destruction', the band is poised to take the metal world by storm once again. From their electrifying shows at Brutal Assault and Alcatraz to headlining across Europe, MORTAL SIN is not just back — they’re here to reclaim their throne in the annals of thrash metal history.
