Former MEGADETH bassist reflects on his past and current projects ahead of Louder Than Life festival.

In a raw and revealing chat with Meltdown from WRIF in Detroit, former MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson opened up about his current gig with METAL CHURCH and his feelings toward his past with MEGADETH. As the heavyweights prepare to share the stage at the Louder Than Life festival on September 17, Ellefson candidly noted, 'I don't care anymore.' It's been five years since he parted ways with the legendary thrash band, and he's carved out a new path, embracing a broader musical palette and a fresh tribe.

Ellefson reminisced about his time with MEGADETH, acknowledging his foundational role in the band's inception. 'I'm grateful for my time there. The band wouldn't have happened without me,' he asserted, reflecting on the pivotal moments that led to the band's establishment. He emphasized the importance of storytelling in music, sharing how he often revisits those early days on his podcast, ensuring that the legacy is preserved through multiple perspectives.

When asked if he would stick around to catch MEGADETH's performance at the festival, his response was as carefree as it was definitive: 'Who cares? It's not my band anymore.' He recognized that the current iteration of MEGADETH is a different beast, driven by frontman Dave Mustaine's vision, and he wishes them well from the sidelines. 'I was just out for two weeks with KINGS OF THRASH playing early MEGADETH songs, and fans loved it,' he said, highlighting that admiration for one band doesn’t negate appreciation for another.

Ellefson didn't shut the door on future collaborations or appearances, especially regarding the ongoing farewell tour. He recalled discussions about a potential reunion with former members, suggesting that there’s room for a broader celebration of MEGADETH's legacy. 'Why not bring back key members and make it something bigger?' he pondered, pointing out the successful reunions of other classic bands. It's clear that while he’s moved on, he still holds a torch for the past and sees the value in its history.

As he prepares for the festival, Ellefson remains undaunted, riding the waves of his new musical endeavors, while maintaining a respectful distance from the legacy he helped create. 'I have METALLICA and MEGADETH records… why not have all of it?' he concluded, encapsulating a spirit of unity in the metal community.
