The Gauntlet: How was today’s show?
Stu: It was awesome, we had a good time. There are definitely more people watching us than when we played Warped in 2007. It is really hard for us to gauge how things are going in the states. We just can tell by how many kids are watching us and there is a marked improvement. But we are having a great time.
The Gauntlet: With Warped, you probably aren’t doing a full set?
Stu: We get something like 30 mins. Yesterday we took an extra 15 minutes and got in a bit of trouble. Our tour manger got shouted at. We get along pretty well with the people running the production though. We are well behaved.
The Gauntlet: Are you out there mingling with the other bands?
Stu: Yeah. We caught Alexisonfire and NoFX and some others. It took us a while to get off the bus and start hanging with the other bands. It is so hot out there though at times. There were some bands from Florida complaining; we are from England. It is not fun playing in Phoenix when it is 110 degrees out. It took us a while to adjust. We are getting there and meeting as many bands as we can that we like. There aren’t many that we would play with on tour though.
The Gauntlet: Have you landed on NoFX’s radar yet?
Stu: We get along with them really well actually. Melvin came out and watched us play. We are going to hang out with him later tonight as it is his birthday.
The Gauntlet: That sucks, so they aren’t ripping on The Gallows?
Stu: No, it’s always lots of fun though. He picks his victims carefully though and we aren’t a religious band. It also helps that we did a tour in the US with Bad Religion and our tour manager used to work with NoFX. We were quite welcome in that camp.
The Gauntlet: How was the change from a small label to a large label?
Stu: It was great. It means we can now do the band fulltime. Any bands goal is to be able to do their art and not have anything take from that. It let us get on and make the music that we want to make. Now people have heard of us. It is a big thing seeing our records in record shops. The indie label we were on wasn’t just a small label, it was a fucking small label and they couldn’t handle us. We also got to work with a great producer, Gggarth. We met with him and a few others.
The Gauntlet: Gggarth has done quite a few metal albums, what did he bring to the table for you guys?
Stu: We met with him and a few other producers and we made it very clear to them that we had a clear picture of what we wanted to do. We just needed someone who was capable of capturing the sound we wanted. We wanted to make a rock album, straight to tape. We didn’t want to fuck around with digital or Pro Tools. If there were a few mistakes, just leave them on there. Fuck that man, you can tell when a record has been surgically made to sound good. It gives it more innocence and a humane side and not all robotic sounding.
The Gauntlet: The Gallows sound is very raw and powerful. Do you see the day when the band goes out on tour with a metal band?
Stu: We all listen to all kinds of music and have toured with a lot of different bands lately. We did well with Machine Head’s fans in Germany. We got where we are by playing with anyone. We love that their fans liked us. Warped tour is great for that by having so many different bands. Kids might have only heard of us but they hear us start to play and they come over. It is all about breaking down those barriers.
The Gauntlet: What are the plans for after Warped?
Stu: We are going to play some shows in Australia and Japan then go back and play some shows in Europe and then back to America. As long as people come see us play, we will keep playing.
The Gauntlet: Are you as broken up as I am over Panic at the Disco breaking up today?
Stu: Did they?
The Gauntlet: Yeah, two key members split to do their own thing.
Stu: That is great news. One less shit band we have to worry about. That is my official quote on it.
The Gauntlet: Any closing words?
Stu: There are a few bands that a lot of your readers should check out. There is a band out on Epitaph Europe called The Ghost Of A Thousand. They just put their new record out. There is also a band called Blackhole. They are awesome but they are wankers. There is a great all girl punk band from Orange County called Civet.
