KAMELOT's Thomas Youngblood Slams A.I. Music Generation: 'Let's Think for Ourselves'

In a candid interview, the KAMELOT guitarist expresses his disdain for AI in music creation, urging fans to embrace authenticity.

In a recent chat with Jorge Botas of Portugal's Metal Global, KAMELOT's formidable axe-slinger, Thomas Youngblood, threw down the gauntlet against the rising tide of artificial intelligence in music production. As the debate rages on about A.I. tools generating melodies, harmonies, and lyrics, Youngblood's gut feeling is clear: this trend is set to run its course. He expressed a fervent hope that fans and artists alike will eventually reject A.I. in favor of the raw, unfiltered creativity that defines the heavy metal ethos. "I hope it runs its course where people are, like, 'Nah, this is kind of not worth it,'" he declared, emphasizing the importance of thinking for oneself.

When pressed about his own temptations to dabble with A.I. tools for inspiration, Youngblood was unequivocal: "No, not at all!" The only time he turned to A.I. was for logistical help in crafting a tour itinerary. This speaks volumes about his commitment to artistry that thrives on human emotion and experience rather than algorithmic calculations.

Youngblood’s concerns don’t end there. He noted the unsettling nature of A.I. learning from user interactions, echoing fears that resemble the early discussions surrounding Google—once a tool for knowledge, now a crutch for thought. "It’s a little scary, too, because it starts to learn who you are based on your questions," he mused, voicing a sentiment that resonates deeply within the metal community, where authenticity and personal expression reign supreme.

KAMELOT is gearing up for the release of their highly-anticipated new album, "Dark Asylum," dropping on August 28 through Napalm Records. The record promises to be a powerhouse, featuring two already-released singles, "Ashen World" and "Godlike Alchemy." With the long-time producer Sascha Paeth back in the mix alongside Jacob Hansen for mixing and mastering, fans can expect nothing short of a sonic masterpiece.

What’s more, the album showcases a unique collaboration with Ignacia Fernández, crowned Miss World Chile 2025, who lends her talents to the tracks "Ashen World" and "Sanctuary." "Dark Asylum" unfolds as a complex tapestry of fifteen interconnected compositions that delve deeper into the RavenHill narrative, seamlessly weaving orchestral passages with heavy guitar riffs, atmospheric layers, and character-driven storytelling.

Founded in the early '90s in Florida, KAMELOT has carved out a legacy as one of the foremost names in modern symphonic and progressive power metal. With classics like "The Fourth Legacy," "Karma," and "Epica" cementing their status, the band continues to push the boundaries of heavy music through ambitious live performances and a commitment to narrative depth.
