In an electrifying new conversation with Steve Harkins of TalkShopLive, Amon Amarth's vocal juggernaut Johan Hegg and thunderous bassist Ted Lundström revealed the details surrounding their impending album, "The Allfather Awakens", set to storm the metal scene on October 2 via Metal Blade Records.
As per the band's relentless tradition, the Norse god Odin, the all-knowing deity of war, wisdom, and poetry, serves as the pulsating heart of their lyrics and visuals. Yet, in a refreshing twist, "The Allfather Awakens" stands as a collection of historically inspired epic tales rather than a concept album, channeling the spirit of conflict and the noble sacrifice for a greater cause.
Johan elaborated on the lyrical landscape: "It's a themed album, I would say, where most songs are connected to Odin in one way or another. We dive into the mythological depths of Norse lore while also weaving in historical motifs that reflect the Vikings’ relationship with their god." This commitment to authenticity rings true, as the band continues to forge their path through the ancestral tales of their heritage.
Reflecting on their childhood fascination with Viking folklore, Johan recounted a pivotal moment when his sister inscribed runes on her wall, igniting a flame of curiosity that would evolve into a lifelong passion. "I found this incredible comic series called Valhalla, which fueled my obsession further. It all spiraled from there," he reminisced. Ted echoed these sentiments, revealing how their shared interest in Norse mythology naturally influenced the band’s identity as they sought to carve out a unique niche in the burgeoning metal scene of the early '90s.
As they delved into the recording process, the duo praised Danish producer Jacob Hansen, who took the helm for this album. Johan shared, "Working with him was a breath of fresh air. It was our first collaboration, and everything clicked seamlessly." Ted added, "We had a productive session after meeting him on a previous European tour, and it was evident from the start that he was the right fit for what we wanted to achieve. No headlocks needed—just pure creative synergy!"
Discussing the songwriting process, Ted noted a shift in their approach this time around, revealing that the guitarists began riffing and exchanging ideas while on tour, giving them a head start on new material. Johan chimed in about how their setup on the road allowed for a more fluid writing process, showcasing their adaptability and hunger to create. They opted to focus on individual tracks during recording sessions instead of the traditional method of layering instruments across multiple songs, ensuring each piece received the attention it deserved.
