Theories: Regression

I mean, hot damn—it’s not often a “Death Grind” outfit emerges with equal coherence and rawness, but that’s the case with Theories: the band’s new ten-track, full-length Metal Blade release, Regression, is an a-typical crusher that showcases Theories’ impactful songwriting.

Comprised of current and former members of Skarp, Samothrace, and Book of Black Earth, Theories has been slaying in the Pacific Northwest and beyond since 2011, pushing the often rigid confines of genre-specificity with organic, all-purpose “heavy” that dares to imbue the feverish pulse of Grind with the precision of Death Metal.

The result of this successful amalgamate is heard on Regression where drummer Joe Axler’s skillful percussive attacks give the tunes slaps of intensity; guitarist Lee McGlothen shreds across the tumultuous tunes with complex, downright inventive leads and riffs; bassist Kush Karimi seamlessly tramples in tandem; and vocalist Rick Powell’s acerbic vox indiscriminately cuts through the din. In sum, the band establishes a signature, searing sound marked by callous performances. Favorite track: “Swimming in Mud,” which appropriately plunders with sexy groove heaving a bevvy of minor cords, blast beats, and bends that simply make you pleasure wince. Recorded at The Red Room and The Boiler Room with producer and engineer Derek Moree (The Sword, Pelican, Minus the Bear, etc.), and with mixing and mastering done by Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed), Regression was released on March 24, 2015, and can be picked up via Metal Blade Records at www.MetalBlade.com or through the Theories Bandcamp.com page at Theories.BandCamp.com.
