The Expectorated Sequence Interview
The Expectorated Sequence is one of Canada’s noisiest bands, spawning from influences that range from Converge to D.R.I. which can be heard in the band’s first full length “Hair Bombâ€. Unlike the band’s previous Ep “Over The Top†they have now taken a turn towards the ways of noise and heavy, shoving both into a form that can split off into directions unwillingly at times. While still keeping a raw sound that exemplifies the powerful atmosphere created by their spastic song structures the band have no become an act you can’t just throw into a category, giving freedom to their style.
TheHXC spoke with the band in regards to their unhinged expectorating of heavy sounds which can be heard on “Hair Bombâ€.
TheHXC: What is the Expectorated Sequence?
The Expectorated Sequence: We have zits, we use butt plugs, some of our teeth are missing and we also have babies.
TheHXC: When did the Expectorated Sequence form?
The Expectorated Sequence: April of 2002, after previous bands called the Fifth Season, Baitholder and Unforgiven chapter (what a shitty name)
TheHXC: Are there any plans for a U.S. tour in the future?
The Expectorated Sequence: Due to problems some of us had in the past with the US borders we definitely will not risk to go there at least for the next 2-3 years because we will be considered terrorists.
TheHXC: What are your current touring plans of Canada?
The Expectorated Sequence: A cross Canada tour will happen in 2006, we are not sure when exactly. Right now we are talking about a Euro Tour for early 2006, nothing is set in stone. But we sure are ready to leave when the good opportunity will show up.
TheHXC: The Expectorated Sequence is very grind oriented, what particular acts do you derive your sound from?
The Expectorated Sequence: It is not grind oriented, but if I have to answer I’ll say D.R.I.
TheHXC: How do you feel the full length differs from your "Over The Top" EP?
The Expectorated Sequence: We released our first EP on the go, quickly recorded and including old songs from our first demo. We only wanted to have something released so that people could know we exist. We feel Hairbomb differs from our previous material because we are now a whole. We know each other pretty well now. We all listen to different kinds of music but we tend to like the same feelings expressed in songs. We also like things to evolve and to change. Making another over-the-top record would have been boring. That’s our opinion, we like variety. Hairbomb was also recorded with different gear so the sound is obviously different.
TheHXC: You guys get flak about having a sound associated with Daughters, but there is certainly a lot more going on in your full length.
The Expectorated Sequence: I know buddy, I know!
TheHXC: Are there any Expectorated Sequence side projects?
The Expectorated Sequence: Rick has been in Final Bâton as long as he has been in the ES, it is a screamy punk rock band where he plays guitar and sings in French. Faf was the singer for Observing the falling tree for a couple of years but he quit the band and the guys changed their name to Beneath the Massacre. Arch played drums for a screamo band called a quiet night for a kidnapping, but it lasted 3 months, like every screamo band, and was accompanied by a lot of drama. But we all try to focus on what is tangible for us, which is the Expectorated Sequence.
TheHXC: How long had you guys worked on your full length "Hair Bomb"?
The Expectorated Sequence: Over a year. We released over the top 8 months after recording it so we already had 3 songs for hairbomb. Over the top was released august 2004 and Hairbomb October 2005, you do the math.
TheHXC: With the time it took to record, are there any left over songs to be on another release?
The Expectorated Sequence: Hum. No, there are no “left over†songs from the recording period. Therefore we started writing material really quick so we already have some songs that we are not playing live yet.
