What kind of crazy things do Super Fans do in the name of their favorite artist?
“I stole a car to go see ICP live. No license, no permit and I was a wee little lad of 14,” says RANDALL “HANKA” McNEILL, the Insane Clown Posse Super Fan who has seen the band perform live over 220 times and is a guest on Episode Five.
Now THAT is a SUPER FAN.
For three decades, ICP have been largely reviled and almost universally acknowledged as the worst band in popular music. However despite all the vitriol and the ridicule they’ve received, the Detroit based duo have achieved remarkable success in their career, selling over 6.5 million records and securing two platinum and five gold records. Most importantly, they’ve inspired an incredibly dedicated, cult-like following of acolytes called, Juggalos.
So, is all of the harsh criticism levied upon Insane Clown Posse justified or is the Detroit based duo just entirely misunderstood? Is there a clever artistry to their rhymes and earnest wonder in their lyrical mythos they call, the “DARK CARNIVAL” or is it all low-rent ideology exploiting hip-hop culture for easy targets of white, disenfranchised youths?
Insane Clown Posse Hater, DERRICK BRAXTON, believes that ICP have no standing in the pantheon of Hip Hop's greatest. Braxton is an accomplished composer, recording engineer and producer who has worked with such greats as LUPE FIASCO, SWIZZ BEATZ, JAY-Z , PHARRELL WILLIAMS, and RAEKWON. On Episode 5, Braxton claims Insane Clown Posse have gotten by with bad production, cheap shock-rock antics and ersatz artistry.
However, Insane Clown Posse Super Juggalo, RANDALL HANKA McNEILL, has emphatically challenged those charges in this episode and explained the misunderstood ethos and the ultimate allure of Insane Clown Posse. There is no question that Hanka is the best Juggalo to defend The Clowns, as he is possibly the most fervent of all Super Fans. Hanka has seen ICP perform live over 220 times, has collected thousands of memorabilia items and he is also an accomplished photographer who has taken over 100,000 photographs of Insane Clown Posse.
Convince Me To Like This Band offers a forum for musical “Super Fans” and “Haters” to passionately debate music. Previous episodes discussed, SLAYER, PHISH, MORRISSEY and RUSH. The program features pop culture’s most polarizing musical artists over the past fifty years, spanning many genres.
The guests who appear on the podcast are the most extreme fanatics to be found. This includes fans like Episode One's guest, MIKE MEYER, who famously carved "SLAYER" into his arms and then lit them on fire (all of which was officially memorialized Slayer's, “Divine Intervention” album artwork). Episode Two’s Super Fan guest was BRIAN BAVOSA, a fan of the most obsessive type who has seen Phish perform live over 454 times. Episode Three’s Super Fan, JOSE MALDONADO, also known as, “The Mexican Morrissey,” hosts a weekly Smiths/Morrissey tribute radio show, has been the singer of Smiths & Morrissey tribute band since 1992, and he has seen Morrissey perform over one-hundred times. Rush Super Fan JILLIAN MAROYONVICH, a former Barack Obama aide, is a devout fan who has seen the band perform over ninety times, was the co-organizer of RUSHCON and was also featured in the 2015 Rush documentary, TIME STAND STILL.
The "Haters" on this podcast hold similar notoriety and musical pedigree such as Episode One’s Slayer-Hater BRAM TEITELMAN, who is a Napalm Records employee and the co-founder of www.MetalInsider.net. Episode Two’s Phish-Hater and consummate contrarian, TIM HARRINGTON, is the singer of the seminal indie rock band, Les Savy Fav. Episode Three’s Morrissey-Hater was ANDREW NOVICK, who’s 1980’s brat-punk band, Warlock Pinchers, penned the brutish and comedic song, “Morrissey Rides A Cockhorse.” Lastly, the Rush Hater on Episode Four was Professor BRIAN COGAN, Ph.D who is author of several books on pop culture including, The Encyclopedia of Punk.
