THE WATERSHEAD VIDEO THAT SNUCK INTO THE CULTURESCAPE IN EARLY APRIL: A video review of PARTS PER MILLION's “2020 vision"
Provocative, Explosive, Thought Provoking. Unifying and Evocative.
Last April about 3 days and 1 month ago, Bostons PARTS PER MILLION lit the fuse for the video single "2020 vision -" an extraordinary rally call to the politically polarized system of citizens to Unify. Since April the views have climbed in slow steady degree to 66,290 as of this morning. I suspect this to begin to accelerate as the word spreads and catches fire. The song appeals to a diverse set of fans including, Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Grunge, and even some Pop fans. The critical acclaim is a gratuitous love fest and the comments on the video - and this is the first time I have seen this, are 100% positive. In fact they are largely exuberant. There seems to be the suggestion that the larger plutocracy here in America see's this division as an opportunity. Some I have shared it with believe this production may be the most effective approach to unification of citizenry. I tend to agree. So Hats of to the gents from Boston and here's hoping they take up the mantle of this crusade. Regardless of what you think. This band is producing music that is something everybody should give a spin. this one of those tunes you keep coming back to. I start the day with it on 11db and what a way to start the morning before the fear mongers start to deliver the daily bad news: death counts and media attacks. Check it out!
Many videos are quite esoteric and often seem like disconnected vignettes – that may or may not have a conscious theme or meaning. This video is telling a story that is very explicit and accessible by comparison. The message is very bold and in its delivery frightening from the moment you see it’s ominous opening to a slow and haunting acoustic guitar while the action states on an old tube television the words; “You are Slaves.” This conveyance is clearly speaking of governance, political manipulation, And the media - who seeks to guide our thinking in a sinister manner toward paranoia. It presents ideas that you have, perhaps suspected, or even thought to be true in a pejorative sense. In the words of the late George Carlin - “We do not have elected public servants; we have owners!”
The video takes a strong stand of us versus them or the people vs. the government military industrial complex – the defacto plutocracy, and the News media, most of which is feeding us opinions while saying the same thing on both sides. The video takes no party, just that it is all a rigged game. If you think about it too much you can get really freaked out. It is a bold fearless statement for sure, especially with this nationalism trend and the appetite for authoritarianism. The video is highly effective for what it is expressing. Listen to it and that feeling of helplessness will be replaced by one of courage and strength and the memory that "Yes I do need to think for myself and separate the signal from the noise." Check it out!
The video has a surface overt narrative and several layers with highly charged imagery scattered throughout. It also uses three colors of light to articulate points. I will let you discover these for yourself. There is nothing subtle about this video. Hats of to both Periphery and the direction by Alex Stinson who has helped create a nearly perfect cinematic vision.
No more spoilers. If you have not seen it, you can develop your own opinion from here. Its a bold stand and expressing relative topics to the sometimes eerie even surreal places we have been as citizens. It is dark and does not take anything lightly but in deadly earnest. Watch the video…
Watch the Video.
