Walls Of Jericho Interview
The Gauntlet: How's it going?
Candace: Pretty good. It is so hot out. It is cooking us. I don't need to be outside anymore, we are done.
The Gauntlet: At least you are going on a little early so you aren't in the full heat that some of the later bands get.
Candace: Yeah, but it is still blazing by the time we play. We don't want to sit around all day in the sun cooking.
The Gauntlet: Other than the heat, how has Ozzfest been?
Candace: Ozzfest has been great. The kids are just insane. All the bands are incredible. We are having a blast throwing down. It's been a great time.
The Gauntlet: Ozzfest was the first time I have witness Walls of Jericho live. I loved the energy from you guys the first thing in the morning.
Candace: We try. We get ready, we prepare as we know we are going out there. We go on early so all we can do is laugh about it. The doors were barely opened.
The Gauntlet: Walls of Jericho was the 3rd band on and you still had a very large crowd on the second stage.
Candace: It has been really good. The people were really cool.
The Gauntlet: Are you glad you are a 2nd stage band? I can't imagine seeing you on the main stage with everyone in the first 100 rows sitting down in their high priced seats.
Candace: Yeah, we are all about the second stage and being closer to the people with more interaction. I don't like being so far away. I would definitely hate to play the main stage with seats in front of me. That's boring. I like to jump out. We look forward to seeing the energy from people. We can jump of the stage and see people sing along.
The Gauntlet: I figured you would have stopped doing that after your recent injuries.
Candace: Oh yeah. No recent injuries from this tour. Bob from A Life Once Lost fell off a box onstage and got a gash on his knee; but no real injuries so far.
The Gauntlet: How come you haven't played Warped before?
Candace: We were offered to play some shows last year but never did. We were doing some festivals in Europe last summer.
The Gauntlet: How does Ozzfest compare to the big summer festivals in Europe?
Candace: Ozzfest is a big packaged deal. We do the same thing everyday with the same people and it becomes like family. With the European festivals, we would play a festival, then do four or five days of our own shows and then another festival. With Ozzfest we are playing our own off dates, but we can look forward to seeing the same people each date. Ozzfest is more exciting and more personal on that level. It's got an overall better vibe.
The Gauntlet: What are some of the bands you've been checking out on Ozzfest?
Candace: We know almost everybody on the second stage. Chris has been checking out Hatebreed every night. I have been checking out Dragonforce. I watched Lacuna Coil out a couple of times. I have watched everybody. I really look forward to seeing The Red Chord and they are on the same stage as us.
The Gauntlet: The new album is out August 22.
Candace: Yes, "With Devils Amongst Us All" is out August 22 on Trustkill Records. We are really excited about it.
The Gauntlet: How was the recording of this album different than previous albums?
Candace: We have never used a producer. We always recorded and produced all of our other records. We finally stepped out of that box and it was amazing. It is nice to have somebody else. It was nice to have somebody else to agree or disagree on things. He also helped put some structure to our songs. Overall the dynamic level of the songs has improved.
The Gauntlet: What made the band want to finally use a producer for this album? Ben Schiegel does an awesome job on it.
Candace: With what is going on, we knew we had to step up our program. We wanted our fourth Walls of Jericho album to not be our fourth Walls of Jericho album. We wanted to stretch out a little bit and have something different.
The Gauntlet: I finally got to hear the fully mastered album this week. It is the best album I have heard this year so far. It is an amazing album.
Candace: really. Oh man. Thank you. That is awesome to hear.
The Gauntlet: The song "No Saving Me" is great. It's a step in a different direction for you as you sing.
Candace: We've done something like it with one of our other records. We put an acoustic song on the album that Chris and I wrote. With the last album, we tried to do another song, but we ran out of time in the studio. It is just a part of something that I wanted to do. It is something that I wanted to do. Chris and everybody else was interested in doing it.
The Gauntlet: When did you realize you could sing?
Candace: I was in choir since the third grade.
The Gauntlet: What led you to doing the hardcore vocals?
Candace: The whole idea of being at shows and the intensity and anger. I love the anger. That is basically what got me into it. It wasn't about being pretty, it was about being aggressive.
The Gauntlet: On future albums, do you think we will hear more singing?
Candace: I'm not sure about that. I'm not ready for that. We are not sure about that yet.
The Gauntlet: How was the shooting of the video for "A Trigger Full of Promises" go?
Candace: It was quite an experience. We shot it way out in the woods at this crazy old house were they shot S&M videos in the 80's. It was quite intense. All the rooms were themed. Lots of chains. There were tons of little weird rooms. It was definitely interesting. We put up some pictures on our MySpace page.
The Gauntlet: So is the video a bondage video?
Candace: Not exactly
The Gauntlet: Bummer
Candace: I am chained up, so you will have to check it out. We don't have a date when it is out yet, but they have been playing it on the video screen at the mainstage of Ozzfest.
The Gauntlet: Any plans after Ozzfest?
Candace: We will be touring as much as we possibly can after Ozzfest. One thing about our band is people say they kind of like our music, but once they see our live show they are totally into us. We like having people come out and talk to us after the show and on MySpace.
