ETID Interview
I caught up with Jordan from Every Time I Die at the begining of a sold out tour with Bleeding Through, Between the Buried and Me, and Haste the Day.
Jordan: Is this for the MTV Reality show 'The Gauntlet'?
The Gauntlet: No, haven't heard of it.
Jordan: Do people confuse your site with it?
The Gauntlet: No, we get confused with a Gay S&M club in LA though. From what I hear, they just had a Mr. Rubber contest.
Jordan: Oh really. On our bus, 'the gauntlet' is when you have to walk by all the bunks. People just flick your nipples. You should devote a whole section of your site to nipple flicking. I saw a commercial that had a dude in it. It was a commercial for nipple chafing. The dude was running a marathon and he seriously had blood running down both nipples. He was running so much that his shirt was chafing his nipples and the blood was just soaking into it. It was brutal man.
The Gauntlet: Running is a rough sport. I used to run cross country in high school. Occasionally I'd watch the marathons on TV and there was a female runner that would get so dehydrated by the 17th mile she'd just have massive diarrhea explosions.
Jordan: Oh boy, I never thought about that. That's fucking sexy! Maybe she just did it to psych out the other runners.
The Gauntlet: Anyways, How has the tour with Bleeding Through going?
Jordan: Yes, we played one show, then had three days off in Southern California. I really wouldn't mind if that's how every tour was. Put in one show, and three nights off in a nice weathered area. We had to drive across the country in dangerous conditions to get here for the show. But there were like 900 kids and it was a great show.
The Gauntlet: You made it out ok this time though.
Jordan: I flipped the van last month. We had to drive through the same highway, same time of night, same conditions. We pulled off in Nebraska and rented another box truck which is what caused it last time.
The Gauntlet: I'm just shocked the still trust you to drive.
Jordan: Well, it's not like I was fucking text messaging while driving. I just hit some ice. It was pretty unavoidable. It's scarier to drive now. I drive more like an old woman. I was doing like 35 on the freeway.
The Gauntlet: What did you do with your free time out here?
Jordan: We went to visit Paul Frank Ind. They do our clothing. We wanted to thank them in person and say hi. We also went to Metal School. It's awesome. It's in LA. It's a bunch of 80's cover bands. A lot of celebrities show up and sing their own songs. The dude from Godsmack was there, a dude from SOAD, and Ron Jeremy was there. It's a pretty big deal. It was awesome. We did a lot of preparing for the tour. This is a long one. They all start to bleed together. If you have one week off between tours, it doesn't really matter. It just gives us time to go home and miss it.
The Gauntlet: How was the Story of the Year tour?
Jordan: It was awesome. It was a great tour for us. We are doing the Warped tour this summer. A lot of those fans like us and Story of the Year. It was kinda a Warped Tour warm up for us. We went out their not to be a radio friendly band. We went out there to be a heavy Every Time I Die band that we have been for the last eight years and they loved us. We'd hit the first note and see just a lot of wide eyes. By the middle of the 1st song, they were the best Every Time I Die fans.
The Gauntlet: I hear you are shooting a new video?
Jordan: We are actually filming it at the end of this tour. This tour ends on April 2. Then we will film it shortly after in LA. The video is for 'The New Black'. They were storyboarding it today but I missed it. They are going for like a 70's pool party ala Anchorman and Boogie Nights but with a Every Time I Die twist.
The Gauntlet: You should get Ron Jeremy for that.
Jordan: Hopefully not. I had the most unfortunate experience seeing him do standup comedy in Buffalo a couple months ago. There is nothing worse.
The Gauntlet: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Jordan: I can't eat for a long time before we play. I have to go onstage with a completely empty stomach. If we go on at 9:30pm, I can't eat after 4 o'clock or I'll throw up. I think it's just mental, it's in my fucking head. I just drink 1 or 2 Red Bulls, do a couple pushups. It's weird. I'll be nervous about a show I shouldn't be nervous about, but not for one I should be. It's just nerves, you know what I mean. It depends on the tour. If I am having a lot of fun, I look forward to getting on stage. But there are some tours where I'm just like 'UUUUhhhhhh'. This tour is great. We have a great crew, just got our own lights. I feel comfortable. There is such confidence on this tour it's just been great. We have been best friends with Bleeding Through for a while. We did Ozzfest with them, did our own tour after that. We just did our first tour with Haste the Day at the end of last year. We have never toured with Between the Buried and Me, but we have run into them many times. Their ex-bass player was kicked out of our band actually. So we have that in common with them.
The Gauntlet: How is 'Gutter Phenomenon' doing?
Jordan: It's doing great. Kids like it. Our tour manager tells us we are fucked because a lot of bands like it. If bands like your band, then kids won't like your band. You know what I mean. If bands hate your band, kids like it. Kids seem to like it too, so I guess we made something universal.
The Gauntlet: Any plans to start writing anything new?
Jordan: We have a little time off in April, we might try to write a song or two. We are aiming for a shorter release cycle. I think we want another CD out by next summer. We would like to do a Metallica thing and just tour on the album for 15 years, but we aren't there yet.
The Gauntlet: Just do the Guns N' Roses thing.
Jordan: Oh God. That's just too long. I was reading an interview with Slash and he was saying he didn't know what was taking so long. He said it's just 'verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge chorus.' I think he's playing Download now. We'll just have to wait and see.
The Gauntlet: Anything else?
Jordan: Come check out the show. I guarantee a severe lack of disappointment, meaning you will have a great time at any Every Time I Die show. We thrive on that. Oh, and hey, if you want to pick up the CD, do that also. If you are watching us, you are going to have a good time.
