House of Blues Fades to Black
The House of Blues Sunset has lost to the West Hollywood City Council in a 4-1 vote to remain open. Developers want to use the prime chunk of land on the Sunset Strip for a 149 room hotel and affordable housing complex.
The House of Blues has never been a favorite of city council members. Councilwoman Lindsay Horvath noted the famous nightclub -- the site of a fatal stabbing four years ago -- has become part of Sunset Strip culture. In the past, the West Hollywood city council has considered suspending the club's business license, or pulling the license outright. The club beefed up security and continued hosting some of the areas most memorable rock and metal shows.
In recent months, there seems to be an assault on the venues on the Sunset Strip, the very thing that popularaized and again is revitalizing the famous street. Last year saw the demise of the Knitting Factory and Key Club.
The House of Blues first opened in 1994.
