Shut Up And Play

jacob Lynam It seams like every time I read a blog written by a musician, it's almost always political. When did our rock stars become politicians? Whatever happened to giving people a big rock show and helping them forget about all the every day bullshit? The last few rock shows that I've been to, the lead singer was bitching in-between songs about the economy, politics, society, etc. (kind of like I'm bitching about those bands now). Some call it raising awareness, I call it spreading negativity. People spend their hard earned money to go see a show and to have fun and forget about their problems. We all know that the economy sucks, our government is far from perfect and so on, so shut the fuck up and play. Talk about things that make people happy like drinkin' fuckin' and eatin' pussy. People can say whatever they want about bands like Nickelback, (I know, lowest common denominator, meat head, redneck rock, etc.) but at least those guys put on an entertaining show complete with pyro and larger than life production (It's a rock SHOW, remember?). I have nothing against bands that use their music as a message, but every band doesn't have to be so serious all of the time. There are a lot of bands out there going through those motions just because they see their peers doing it. If a band is just having fun and playing because they love it, it doesn't mean that they suck or that there's no substance to their music. Paul McCartney wrote "Silly Little Love Songs" because people need songs like that. Some of my favorite Metallica songs are just about demented dreams that James had. People need something fun to help them get through the day. Once again, this is not an attack on politically charged bands, (some people need that) but if your in a band like Blink 182 and most of your songs are about masturbation, don't bitch about politics in-between songs. There are too many idiots out there that are just regurgitating information that they've heard other idiots talk about without doing any research.

There are also a lot of bands out there that have a whole "it's us against the world" mentality. We've done more shows than I can remember with bands that are complete douche bags. I love the shows where all of the bands are having a great time together, cutting up on stage and getting the crowd involved. The guys in Papa Roach and Hinder are great to play with. They're all about having a good time and putting on a great show. They also treat all of their opening bands with total respect and make them feel welcome on the tour. There are bands that we've toured with that never even said hello on the whole tour. Some of those same bands wonder why they have no connection with the crowd when they play. They may sound perfect just like their CD and have all the backing tracks recorded, but there is no show. One thing my band has always done, is make sure we give people a good SHOW. With us, we don't bitch about politics on stage, we don't use backing tracks and the music is never flawless live, but who cares, it's rock n roll. To the people that think my band sucks, Great! Go to www.lynamsucks.com and leave us a message (yes, that link is real). We just want to have fun. It's time to shut the fuck up and play.
